Market Synopsis
Bioleaching is a technique used to extract metals from sulfide ores or concentrates using materials found native to the environment such as water, air, and mainly microorganisms. It is the leaching of sulfides that differentiates bioleaching from conventional acid leaching wherein only oxidized materials are leached. Organisms such as Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, Leptospirillum ferrooxidans, and thermophilic species of Sulfobacillus, Acidianus, and Sulfolobus are typically used in the process of bioleaching. The process has the ability to recover several metals, including copper, zinc, lead, arsenic, antimony, nickel, molybdenum, gold, silver, and cobalt. The bacterial action results in the oxidation reaction, which effectively separates the metal from its ore. The process is an efficient and eco-friendly substitute to the conventional mining processes as it does not release any harmful gases in the environment. Recently, the bioleaching process has been employed in recovering metals from industrial waste discharges.
Bioleaching is comprehensively explored as an alternative to conventional metal extraction processes in light of the growing demand for less expensive and more environment-friendly methodologies. Against the backdrop of the global economic slowdown, the bioleaching industry has also witnessed a positive impact but has still maintained a relatively optimistic growth in the past five years. The global bioleaching market is projected to grow at a steady CAGR of 3.8% during the forecast period (2014–2022), owing to the pressing need to develop eco-friendly methods of metal extraction. The total market was sized to be around USD 421 million and is foreseen to reach USD 633 million by 2024.
Bioleaching is extensively used in commercial operations to process ores of copper, nickel, cobalt, zinc, and uranium, which primarily drives the growth of the bioleaching market. On account of its ductility and thermal and electric conductivity, copper has been widely applied in the electricity, construction, transportation, and manufacturing industries which have engendered the demand for material impacting the global bioleaching market positively. Furthermore, R&D activities, huge expenditure, and constant efforts put forth by scientists to create newer species of organisms for bioleaching have also been supplementing to market growth.
Despite facing many challenges, progress has been made, which puts emphasis on the bioleaching mechanism, pore network, microorganism’s cultivation, fluid flow, process catalysts, and others. Researchers are focusing on enhancing the genetic properties of the bacteria used for bioleaching by mutation and genetic engineering to improve the processes’ efficiency. Genomic engineering has been performed to attain desired characteristics in targeted bacteria. The global bioleaching market was valued at USD 421 million in 2014 and is estimated to reach USD 633 million, growing at a CAGR of 3.8% during the forecast period.
The intervention of precise scanning and observatory technologies such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT), particle image velocimetry (PIV), and others, are significantly aiding R&D procedures. Additionally, to increase leaching, permeability, and optimal metal extraction rate, some reformative methods such as agglomeration of oxide copper minerals, enhanced aeration, dripping irrigation regulation, and among others, are proposed, which is expected to strengthen the bioleaching market growth. However, lower-grade extractions and rising global demand for metals are critical barriers for valuable metal extraction that might hamper the market growth.

Market Segmentation
Recently, the extraction of copper by the bioleaching process has gained considerable significance across the globe as the bioleaching process makes copper extraction efficient and economical. The market is witnessing growing demand for copper from military, automotive, electronics, medicine, pipe and fittings, and marine sectors. Thus, researchers across the globe are striving to expedite extraction kinetics and enhance the extent of copper recovery.
Leading players in the copper mining industry are entering into partnerships with key technology solution providers to strengthen their copper production. For instance, Codelco, one of the leading copper producers, entered into a technological collaboration with Biosigma in 2015 for improving its capacity to process copper ore by using the state-of-the-art bioleaching technology developed by Biosigma. Iron is recovered by bioleaching of uranium, and ferric iron is obtained as an intermediate product.
The mining segment accounted for the majority of the market share, while the industrial waste management segment is projected to witness rapid growth over the coming years at a CAGR of 4.6%. Wastewater from industrial discharges, if not treated capably, pollute the environment, which triggers the loss of biodiversity and several undesirable effects on the environment. Therefore, several mining companies are focusing on employing the bioleaching process for the recovery of hazardous metals such as nickel, cadmium, arsenic, and molybdenum, among others.
Presently, bioleaching is used on a small scale for industrial waste management. However, the stringent government regulations concerning environmental protection are likely to leave a positive impact on the application of bioleaching in industrial waste management in the coming years.

Regional Analysis
The South American country Chile is one of the leading countries in the bioleaching operation across the globe. The region was valued at USD 225.15 million in 2018 and is projected to reach USD 281.87 million, growing at a CAGR of 3.9%. The country has a great practice of producing and exporting copper. Thus, it plays a vital role in the development and application of bioleaching of copper ores. Bioleaching operation accounts for close to 10% of the country’s total copper production. According to the International Trade Administration, it is estimated that in 2016 Chile produced 5.55 million tons of copper, which represents 30% of present world production. Thus, the burgeoning production capacity of copper is driving the regional bioleaching market.
The U.S. bioleaching market has witnessed rapid development in the last 20 years, from uncontrolled leaching of copper out of piles to an advanced biotechnology process. The country accounts for close to 25% of the total copper mining across the globe. As a consequence, bioleaching has become turned out as one of the strong economic fields. Bioleaching has occupied an essential place in mining technologies, as Canada produces more than 60 unique minerals and metals.
According to the Mining Association of Canada, it is estimated that Canada’s mining industry is the largest private-sector employer of native people and a significant customer of native-owned businesses. Moreover, the extraction and refining of minerals such as gold, silver, iron, copper, zinc, nickel, and others, are also increased with the rising demand for these minerals from various industries. According to the Natural Resources of Canada, it is estimated that in 2017, the total mineral production reached a value of USD 43.9 billion, an increase of 11.3% from the 2016 production total of USD 39.4 billion.

Key Players
Few of the prominent industry participants of the bioleaching market include Freeport-McMoRan, Rio Tinto Plc, Teck Resources Ltd, Nyrstar NV, BioSigma, and Bactech Green. For the expansion of their business, market players are incorporating various strategies such as acquisition and investment in various metal mining projects. For instance, in April 2019, Rio Tinto approved an additional USD 302 million investment in the Resolution copper project in the U.S. state of Arizona. The investment will fund additional drilling, ore-body studies, infrastructure improvements, and permitting activities as Rio Tinto looks forward to advancing the project to the final stage of the project’s permitting phase. In April 1, 2019, Teck Resources Ltd, announced the acquisition of Sumitomo Metal Mining Co. (“SMM”), Ltd. and Sumitomo Corporation (“SC”) of a 30% indirect interest in Compañia Minera Teck Quebrada Blanca S.A. (“QBSA”), which owns the Quebrada Blanca Phase 2 (“QB2”) project. SMM and SC are predicted to contribute close to USD 1.3 billion to the QB2 project in 2019.
