レポート概要

The Asia-Pacific synthesis gas (syngas) market is expected to grow at a significant rate during the forecast period (2018 – 2023). The market is expected to increase rapidly in the emerging economies due to a rapid growth of the commercial segment.
Syngas is conceptually similar to natural gas, containing a mixture of hydrogen, methane, and carbon monoxide. It can be combusted in a gas turbine engine to produce electricity. Syngas only has 50% of the energy density as compared to natural gas, due to which syngas is mostly suited for the production of transportation fuels and other chemical products. Syngas can also be utilized as a basic chemical building block in the petrochemical and refining industries.

Usage as an Alternative of Natural Gas is Driving the Market

Syngas is seen as that replacement of natural gas, which is a more thermally efficient liquid fuel. Combustion of syngas at the cost of zero carbon emissions can be used to generate electricity. Thus, it provides a much cleaner, economical, and renewable source of energy instead of the common used natural gas. Synthesis gas and its derivatives are of significant commercial importance. The high growth in demand for new production plants to produce hydrogen, they are required to satisfy the new fuel environmental standards. This is coupled with the expansion of chemical production in China and India. Moreover, there are new applications of gas-to-liquids and coal-to-liquids processes into the construction pipeline, with biomass-to-liquids in fast pursuit. The drive to reduce the overall syngas production cost has also witnessed significant research and development efforts, like ceramic membrane reactors (ITM Syngas and OTM alliance), to obviate the need for a cryogenic oxygen plant, catalytic plasma reactors, micro-reactors, and membrane steam reforming with flameless distributed combustion, etc.

China Dominating the Syngas Market

China dominates the Asia-Pacific syngas market on account of the increased demand for chemicals and abundant coal reserves in the country. The growth of the syngas and derivatives market is primarily being driven by the rising demand for electricity in China. Furthermore, feedstock flexibility and the polygeneration nature of syngas for the production of electricity, chemicals, and fuels are also expected to be among the key factors driving the syngas market during the forecast period.
