Laser Systems Segment will Register the Highest CAGR During the Forecast Period

Lasers are highly accurate and quick-acting which makes them a suitable technology for anti-drone systems. Countries like the US, China, and Russia are significantly investing in laser-based anti-drone systems and hence is expected to register the highest CAGR during the forecast period. In August 2018, the British Army placed an order for Israeli anti-drone system and became the first customer for this new and advanced Drone Dome system. The Drone Dome built by Rafael is capable of disabling an airborne UAS with a two-second concentration from its 5Kw hard kill laser effector. Likewise, Raytheon is also ramping up its research and development of High Energy Laser (HEL) and High Powered Microwave (HPM) weapons that can detect and disable the increasingly cheap and capable drones. Also, in the last few years, the US Defense Department has shifted its focus on directed energy weapons as an alternative to counter enemy drones from tracking and targeting soldiers on the ground. As of May 2019, the US Marine Corps was testing a prototype of Compact Laser Weapons System (CLaWS) – an anti-drone ground-based laser system. With the advancement in laser technology, advanced anti-drone systems will be developed in the coming years which will support the growth of this segment during the forecast period.

As of 2018, North America Held the Highest Share in the Anti-Drone Market

North America accounted for a major market share in 2018 in the anti-drone market primarily due to the procurement of counter-drone systems by the US DoD. In the past few years, the US government has increased the investment in the counter-drone program. In 2018, Leonardo DRS received an additional USD 13 million to continue engineering and testing a vehicle-mounted system that can protect soldiers from small drones. The earlier contract to Leonardo was awarded in 2017 worth USD 16 million to develop a counter-UAV capability. Also, at the start of 2019, the US Army also awarded a USD 108 million contract to SRC Inc. of Cicero to develop mobile systems that counter small, slow and low-flying drones. In 2017, the Army initially ordered 15 sets of the counter-drone systems as part of a USD 65 million contract. The Air Force followed with a USD 57 million contract for the systems in April 2018. Illegal drone incursions at the airport can result in safety issues and have raised concerns over the years across the airports in the US. Several trial tests were formed in the past three years and with the advancement in technology, it is anticipated that counter-drone systems might be procured in large numbers by the US airports in the coming years.

Competitive Landscape

The anti-drone market is highly competitive and fragmented. Some of the prominent players in the anti-drone market are Israel Aerospace Industries, Lockheed Martin Corporation, Thales Group, DRONESHIELD, Saab AB, Blighter Surveillance Systems Ltd, and Raytheon Company among others. Several start-ups are also entering the market with innovative products which is further increasing the competition in the market. Majority of the companies are focused to develop counter-drone technologies that can be useful for the military globally which can fetch long-term contracts and help the companies to expand their market share in the coming years. In the first quarter of 2019, Citadel Defense Company officially launched its counter-drone solution, Titan. Titan provides the user real-time information, identifying and classifying an approaching UAV or swarm, and selectively applying countermeasures to induce the UAV to land or return to its home base. Likewise, in 2017, Zala Aero Group, a subsidiary of Kalashnikov, unveiled a man-portable counter-unmanned aircraft system that has been designed to bring down commercial drones. Kalashnikov also unveiled new REX-2 anti-drone electronic warfare system recently in June 2019. With the growing investments on new products and the increasing demand from the defense and commercial sector, the anti-drone market is highly lucrative and will offer new opportunities for the existing and new players in the coming years.
