The Electric wheelchair market is expected to exhibit a growth rate of nearly 11% during the forecast period (2020 – 2025).
– The growing population of elder people in developed countries such as Japan where the level of income is high is driving the market growth for electric wheelchair. According to the united nations, the number of people above 60 were 962 million in 2017 and the population is expected to reach 2.1 billion by 2050.

– The market is also driven by the increased cases of spinal injuries due to increasing age, sports injury and road accidents. 46% of spinal injuries occur due to road accidents, 22% due to falls, 16% due to violence and 12% due to sports. Thus, the increasing demand for mobility and comfort of injured patients is driving the market growth.

– However, the lack of charging and mobility infrastructure, high cost, lack of awareness about the features of electric wheelchairs such as efficient braking is restraining the market growth.

– Currently, North America is the largest market for electric chairs due to high purchasing power, ability of old age population to buy medical equipment at a subsidized rate, awareness and the rising trend of technological features.

Key Market Trends

Old Age Population and Spinal Injuries are driving the market

The old-age population of the world is increasing and the UN estimates that by 2030, the old age population will outgrow the children population with the ratio 1.04 to 1. The economic development in countries such as India has given a lot of job opportunities to the younger population which is not able to properly take care of the older population. Manual wheelchairs are exhausting, both for younger people who work really hard as well as for older people who lack upper body strength. This factor is giving rise to the need for automatic mobility for old age people and this factor is driving the market growth for electric wheelchairs.

According to Worldbank.org, there are estimated 1 billion people or 15% of the global population who are suffering from some form of disability and nearly 20% of these 1 billion people are victims to significant disabilities. Electric chairs are not only used by people having a disability due to some form of injury but also by people with cardiovascular and respiratory diseases such as asthma who cannot travel longer distances on foot or manual wheelchair. Reckless and unsustainable development in emerging economies has increased the risk of lung and heart related diseases. According to Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, 1 in 13 people and 1 in 12 children have asthma. Owing to the aforementioned fact, the demand for electric wheelchair will see growth during the forecast period.

Asia Pacific to exhibit the highest growth rate

Asia Pacific is home to 2 most populous countries namely China and India China is considered to be an aging economy with approximately 241 million Chinese people over the age of 60 years. Also, nearly 75% of the world’s wheelchairs are manufactured in China. With the presence of aluminium production hub such as Zhejiang and Guangdong, and electric wheelchair manufacturers such as Yongkang Goodbrother, Henan Yaosen Medical, Hebei Satcon Medical, etc. the market for electric wheelchairs will see growth during the forecast period.

India on the other hand holds rank one in the list of 199 countries when it comes to road accidents. According to the Ministry of Road Transportation and Highway, in 2018, there were 4,67,044 reported road accidents that claimed 1,51,417 lives and injured 4,69,418 people. In 2018, grievous injury accidents increased by 3.6% to 1,25,311 compared to 1,20,971 in 2017. However, the growth rate in road accident injuries was recorded at -1.4% from 2010 to 2018. Although the income level in India is rising it is still low compared to other emerging economies in the world such as China. This factor is acting as a restraint in adoption of electric wheelchairs.

Competitive Landscape

The market for an electric wheelchair is a moderately fragmented one with players such as OttoBock Healthcare GmbH, Invacare Corporation, Permobil AB, etc. dominating the market.

The manufacturers are focusing on design, ergonomics of the wheelchair to provide more comfort to the patient. Concepts such as standing wheelchair, self-driving wheelchair fitted with visual sensors to detect obstacles, ultralight electric wheelchairs made from carbon fiber are expected to drive the market during the forecast period.

– Perbobil signed a contract to acquire Supported BV. This will give Permobil a competitive advantage in comfort in powered mobility due to supported expertise in seating and positioning solution.
