Market Overview
The global high fructose corn syrup market is projected to grow at a CAGR of 4.64% during the forecast period.
– The majority of HFCS produced serves the food industrial sector. The smaller market sector known as retail is purchasing HFCS that is often sold directly to consumers for use at home, or across businesses, such as cafes and restaurants.
– Compared to sucrose, HFCS is relatively cheap, has better solubility, ability to remain in solution and not crystallize, like sucrose under certain conditions. Also, HFCS is liquid and easy to transport, hence, is used in soft drink formulations. However, HFCS has no or little nutritive value other than calories from sugar.
Scope of the Report
The fructose content of HFCS is generally between 42% to 55%, and hence, the global HFCS market is segmented into food & beverages and pharmaceuticals; the food & beverage industry is sub-segmented into the bakery, dairy, beverages, confectionaries, processed foods and others. Moreover, the study provides an analysis of the high fructose corn syrup market in the emerging and established markets across the world, including North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, South America, Middle East & Africa.
Key Market Trends
Wide Application of Fructose in Food Industry
High-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is a liquid sweetener utilizing a modified form of corn syrup, which is also an alternative to sucrose used in the food and beverage industry. The high and fluctuating sugar prices, along with the ease of using HFCS in the beverage industry, has almost replaced sugar in the beverage industry. Although current world sugar prices have largely dropped from the 25-year high, the market remains particularly susceptible to large demand swings and price volatility. Generally, international sugar prices have generally trended downward, as the production of traditional importing countries increased, largely due to domestic support measures. HFCS-55 was strategically designed to have the same relative sweetness as sucrose, so it could be easily substituted for sucrose in foods and beverages. HFCS-42 has a lower relative sweetness, directly attributable to its lower fructose content.
North America Holds the Major Share in HFCS Market
North America is the largest consumer of caloric sweeteners in the world. The production of HFCS in North America has been primarily for the domestic market, until recent years, wherein, most of the produce has gone into exports, mostly due to the large corn availability in the region. Europe is projected as the next region anticipated for growth in the global HFCSs market. In Asia-Pacific, the market is still in the nascent stage. Japan leads the Asian countries regarding the HFCS consumption. Countries like Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, and the Philippines see a low penetration of HFCS, while the United States, Mexico, Japan, and the EU-27 have switched from sugar to HFCS, thus, considering it to be a cheap substitute for sugar.
Competitive Landscape
HFCS has been widely adopted, as it offers advantages over granulated sucrose; for instance, it is easy to supply, has good stability and is easy to handle. The key players of global high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) market includes Archer Daniels Midland Company, Cargill Inc., Ingredion Incorporated, and Tate & Lyle, among others.
