The molded pulp packaging market is projected to grow at a CAGR of 4.5% during the forecast period of 2020-2025. In general, the main raw materials of the pulp and papermaking industry are classified into categories such as wood and non-wood, where non-wood fiber material is an important fiber source in the areas where forest resources are scarce. The effective use of non-wood fiber resources, especially grasses, cereal straws, corn stalks, bamboo, and bagasse, would play a major role in optimizing papermaking raw materials. On the other hand, there are non-wood fibers such as flax, hemp, jute, kenaf, cotton, sisal, and abaca, with properties as good as or much better than softwood materials.
– Consumer preferences towards recyclable and eco-friendly materials drive the market. The growing importance of sustainability has helped make pulp packaging an attractive option. Not only can it be made from recycled materials, but it can also be easily recycled again after its useful life-cycle. It is manufactured with 100% recycled materials. Further, If it doesn’t make it to the landfill or recycling facility, the fibers in pulp packaging are biodegradable, unlike plastic and Styrofoam (EPS) packaging.
– Moreover, the demands in the packaging industry to avoid the use of styrofoam, plastics, and other petroleum-based packaging have contributed to the upward surge of this packaging application. Also, in a recent study by HC Companies, 88% of respondents demanded companies provide more sustainable product offerings. This instance makes the benefits of molded pulp applications in many businesses and industries across the globe.
– The benefit of cost savings compare to plastic, and EPS packaging drives the market. Most plastic and foam packaging is manufactured from petroleum, and as a result, the price constantly fluctuates with the price of oil. Molded pulp packaging is made from widely available and inexpensive natural fibers and post-consumer paper products.
– Further, one of the widest advantages of cost-saving in molded pulp packaging is the ability to stack or “nest” the units for significant space savings. In one commonly referenced comparison, a stack of 40 molded pulp end caps has a 70% space savings to the same number of EPS (Styrofoam) end caps. The exact space savings will vary for different products, but the fact remains that molded pulp is less expensive and much more efficient to store and transport than EPS.
– Stringent government rules and regulations are challenging market growth. According to U.S. government figures, it says that those pulp and paper manufacturers are the fourth largest industrial emitters of greenhouse gas. Further, the pulp and paper industry releases about 212 million tons of hazardous substances into the air and water and is ranked as the third-largest user of industrial water. The EPA figures indicate that the pulp and paper industry ranks in the top four among U.S. manufacturing industries in the release of dioxin and dioxin-like compounds.
– When compared to EPS, molded pulp packaging consumes between 70-115% more energy, results in between 9-31% more air pollution, and emits between 323-348% more greenhouse gas. Due to such issues, the adoption of EPS packaging at some end-user applications challenges the mold pulp packaging market to grow.

Key Market Trends

Consumption of Eggs Accounts Significant Market Share for Trays

– Due to the expected increase in the consumption of eggs and fruits in the near future, along with its attributes such as less weight and recyclability, the market for trays is growing. It has a high demand for egg packaging.
– Further, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the retail price of eggs (grade A) in the United States is decreasing since 2017. From 2017, 2018, 2019, the price in USD per dozen decreases, which are 1.82, 1.6, and 1.54, respectively. Due to the low price, the consumption is increasing by which the demand for molded trays is increasing.
– Egg trays are protective packaging and are made by using recycled newspapers. Its molded fiber trays have good air permeability and hygroscopic ability, which plays an important role in egg packaging and storage.
– Further, the trays have different product dimension with different holdings of number eggs per tray. For instance, Teo Seng Capital Berhad provides different dimensions of egg trays such as its Multi-K Plus product provides a dimension of 296mm x 296mm(+/- 3mm) for large eggs; compact product provides a dimension of 273mm x 273mm (+/- 3mm) especially for smaller eggs.
– Also, key vendors in the egg packaging are expanding through organic methods such as launching new products or expanding their manufacturing capacity. For instance, Huhtamaki developed new egg trays for 30 eggs at its Brazil manufacturing plant. This enhances the growth of molded trays.
– In the United States, according to the US Department of Agriculture, the per capita consumption of eggs is increasing on a yearly basis. This significantly provides the demand for the production of molded pulp trays.
– However, the price of molded fiber is comparatively high compared to plastics. In addition, plastic trays are reusable and washable. This is one of the main factors where plastic is preferred over-molded fiber in the egg packaging, which challenges the market growth.

Asia-Pacific to Witness Market Growth Rate

– Asia-Pacific is projected to be the fastest-growing region in the molded pulp packaging market. This is attributed to the presence of an increasing number of molded pulp packaging manufacturing units in countries such as China, India, Australia, Indonesia, and Bangladesh in the Asia Pacific region.
– China, with its growing food packaging, food service, disposable, healthcare, and electronics industries, is expected to drive the molded pulp packaging market. Food trays molded from wood or paper pulp are customarily used in most retail food markets, particularly for the packaging of fresh meat, poultry, fish. According to USDA Foreign Agricultural Service, China’s 2019 beef production increases compared to 2018. This enhances the tray market.
– Further, in China company such as Qingdao Xinya Molded Pulp Packaging Co., Ltd is a global supplier that produces a product of molded pulp, pulp molding, molded fiber such as bottle wine carrier, etc. has a high number of buyers globally.
– Further, in India, according to IBEF, the Indian e-commerce market is expected to reach a value of USD 200 billion in 2026, from USD 38.5 billion in 2017. This enhances the high demand for electronic appliances, which raises the production of electronics packing tray and clamshell made by molded pulp.
– Also, according to the International Trade Administration, the market size of the medical devices in the Asia-Pacific region is increasing yearly basis, wherein 2019 it was USD 88.6 billion compared to 2018, which was USD 82.9 billion. This provides a growth opportunity for the manufacturers of Asian companies to manufacture trays for healthcare devices packaging. Further players are also focusing on the autoclavable tray.

Competitive Landscape

The molded pulp packaging market is fragmented in nature due to the presence of domestic as well as global players. The companies mainly offer customized solutions as per customer requirements. Further, major players are using various strategies such as new product launches, agreements, acquisitions, and others to increase their footprints in this market. Key players are Maspack Ltd, EnviroPAK Corporation, etc. Recent developments in the market are –

– March 2020 – PepsiCo announced that they are focusing on recyclable molded pulp rings on its soda cans to replace plastic ones. For the coming months after March 2020, the molded pulp rings and secondary paperboard packaging will be used in Sacramento, California, on the company’s 7.5-ounce six-packs of Pepsi and Sierra Mist. This test will help the company achieve its goal of making all packaging recyclable, compostable, or biodegradable by 2025.
– November 2019 – Sonoco announced that it had signed a definitive agreement to acquire Thermoform Engineered Quality (TEQ) LLC and Plastique Holdings Limited. In addition, TEQ produces recyclable, molded-pulp-fiber packaging, and thermoformed plastic packaging for multiple consumer products primarily sold in Europe. Sonoco plans to expand the TEQ healthcare packaging solution, which primarily drives the market in the future.
