The India cold chain logistics market is expected to grow at a CAGR of more than 14% during the forecast period of 2020-2025. The demand for cold chain is due to the growth in sectors like organized retail, processed food, pharmaceuticals, growing shift towards horticulture, etc.
Some of the challenges in the market are the irregular distribution of cold storage capacity, lack of proper logistical connectivity support, and the need for high capital investment. The government of India is providing various technological and financial assistance in order to boost development of cold chain for horticulture and agro food products sector. According to industry sources, the market is fragmented in nature with the presence of large number of small players. Currently, there is a clear shift towards multipurpose storage, and value-added services covering end to end requirements.

Key Market Trends

Temperature Controlled Storage Segment to Dominate the Market Demand

– As per the analysis, temperature-controlled storage segment leads the market with major market share. The segment is expected to see investment due to the influence of major subsidies on cold storages and storage equipment. The cold storage segment in India is highly unorganized with a significant portion of the facilities are privately owned.
– Still, there is a significant room for development where there exists insufficient capacities and underdeveloped supply chains. Most of the cold storages are located close to manufacturing bases where there is a lack of cold storages in the downstream supply chain and in the last mile.
– According to Industry sources, India’s retail sales totaled about USD 630 billion in 2018, 57% of which came from small and medium-sized grocery vendors, which have limited refrigeration and freezing equipment. But modern retailers are growing in large cities such as Mumbai and New Delhi, and the proportion of the smaller players nationwide is expected to drop to 48% by 2023, as modern retailers with cold storage open up more outlets.

Increasing Support and Investment from the Government of India

– The government of India has launched several schemes to support the development of cold chain. For instance, Pradhan Mantri Kisan Sampada Yojana (PMKSY) aims to create modern infrastructure with efficient supply chain management starting from farm gate to retail outlet. The key purpose of PMKSY is not only to provide big boost to the growth of food processing sector in the country but also aim to provide better returns to the farmers.
– Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MFPI) is implementing the Scheme for Integrated Cold Chain and Value Addition Infrastructure as one of the components of PMKSY with the objective of arresting post-harvest losses of horticultural and non-horticultural produce.
– During three years (2016-17 to 2018-19), 461 cold storages have been sanctioned with a combined capacity of 1,948 thousand MT under the Scheme for Integrated Cold Chain & Value Addition Infrastructure. Furthermore, As of Oct 31, 2019, 313 cold chain projects have been approved (under the MFPI) out of which 180 projects have been completed and 133 projects are ongoing.
– The government of India has set up National Centre for Cold Chain Development (NCCD), which help in establishing building standards through international benchmarking and to promote research and development activity in the cold chain sector.
– The state governments have launched several initiatives to support the cold chain sector. As per the statistics, the distribution of cold storages is highly uneven with majority of the cold spaces are located in Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Punjab, Maharashtra, and West Bengal.
