The use of Isophorone Diisocyanate (IPDI) in the manufacturing of polyurethane, and in the coating industry has propelled Isophorone Diisocyanate market growth. This demand for IPDI is expected to push the market to witness a growth at a CAGR of 5.3% in terms of production revenue during 2019–2026. IPDI is also used in the chemical synthesis of aliphatic polyisocyanates. Aliphatic diisocyanates are used primarily to make durable coatings, adhesives, sealants, elastomers, and textiles. IPDI is one of the most common aliphatic polyisocyanates. Polyurethane manufactured from IPDI has applications in the refrigerators, and freezers, furniture, and bedding, footwear, and automotive industries.
The market for IPDI can be termed as an oligopoly as it has very few players with significant production capacities. Global manufacturers such as Covestro, Evonik, Vencorex, and Wanhua Chemical are key manufacturers of IPDI.
In terms of type, IPDI is segmented into guaranteed reagent, chemically pure, and technical grade, of which, guaranteed reagent constituted a 77.93% market share in 2018. Guaranteed reagents are used in analytical applications, and research work where high purity is paramount. These exceed the standards set by associations such as the American Chemical Society (ACS), GR, ANALAR, and P.A. (Proanalysis). The chemically pure type has applications in labs used for educational purposes, while technical grade IPDI is used for bulk manufacturing, also known as commercial-grade or tech grade.

End-User Applications
The majority of IPDI is used to manufacture coatings used in industries such as automotive, and transportation, infrastructure, construction, and wood processing. Of these, the automotive industry contributes significantly to the consumption of IPDI, as the coating that is manufactured using IPDI protects vehicles from UV damage. Several companies have in-house manufacturing capabilities of IPDI, using which polyurethane is produced further.
The use of IPDI in the manufacturing of adhesives and sealants also constituted a significant 19% share in 2018. The growth of small-scale companies, and the demand for hot-melt adhesives and non-hazardous, green adhesives are some of the factors that are projected to propel IPDI market growth.
Elastomers have also gained prominence in recent years due to their applications in seals, molded flexible parts, and other applications such as vehicle manufacturing, medical devices, and tissue engineering.

Polyurethane Materials Act as Substitutes to Hazardous Materials

For instance, BASF announced a strategic partnership with Liyang Shanhu Industry Auto Trim Material Co., Ltd. in May 2019, for the development of lightweight polyurethane systems. The latest trend of using polyurethane in building insulation, which was seen in the 2016 Olympic Games, is also increasing IPDI production. Apart from automotive, polyurethane coating is another key consumer of polyurethane materials. Polyurethane coatings have a wide application base, including aerospace, and defense, automobiles, furniture, construction, safety equipment, plant, and machinery, infrastructure projects, and medical devices.

Wanhua Chemicals has been extensively investing in research and development to further its potential in the IPDI market. The company, in March 2016, announced the start-up of its IPDI plant. It became the first Asia-based company to employ the complete ‘IP-IPN-IPDA-IPDI’ industry chain technology. The new plant is located in Wanhua’s 10 square mile Yantai Industrial Park and comprises the latest phosgene production technology, a fully integrated supply chain, as well as superior operation management, the new state-of-the-art plant will put Wanhua in a competitive situation. Wanhua will market the IPDI monomer under the brand name Wannate.
IPDI allows controlled poly-addition with polyol co-reactants due to its primary and secondary isocyanate groups, which enables molecular structure designing for specific materials. Primary applications of IPDI are waterborne polyurethane dispersions, adhesives, and UV resins. The IPDI trimer can be used in non-yellowing, high-performance PU coatings for various applications such as automotive refinish. The company invested around USD 23,410 million in 2018, which is a rise of 30% in its research and development activities.

Covestro AG has developed IPDI-based cross linkers called the Desmodur Polyisocyanates that are renowned for versatility.
