Vehicle camera is an onboard camera that records things continuously through a vehicle’s front or rear windscreen and sometimes through other windows. The vehicle camera market, in 2018, was valued at USD 5.4 billion and is expected to grow at a CAGR of more than 25% during the forecast period.

Favorable Regulatory Framework Drives Growth of Back Camera Segment by Type
Back cameras find widespread adoption as they aid in the tedious task of reversing a vehicle. They offer convenience as the driver can reverse the car with the help of feedback from a back camera system, as opposed to shuffling between looking behind and checking rear-view mirrors. Moreover, modern vehicles with tinted windows, headrests for rear seats, and a third row for passenger seats further complicate reversing by obstructing the view.
Favorable regulation frameworks drive the adoption of back camera systems in vehicles. For instance, in 2010, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recorded 207 fatalities and an approx. 15,500 injuries caused by cars backing over incorrectly due to the lack of a clear view of the surroundings behind a vehicle. In light of these incidents, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration introduced a regulation in 2014 demanding ‘Rear Visibility Technology’ in all new vehicles weighing less than 10,000 pounds by May 2018.

Front Camera Segment Gaining Traction With the Rise of Autonomous Vehicles
Forward-facing cameras find adoption in various safety offerings, from simple Intelligent Headlamp Control (IHC), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), and Rain Sensing to advanced offerings such as Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR), Obstacle Detection, Pedestrian Detection, and Night Vision. Such a shift is potentially a result of the trending concept of autonomous vehicles gaining hold in the global automotive industry, driven by significant R&D activities and associated investments. In 2018, the president of the U.S. signed the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2018; this legislation includes several sections and directs the U.S. Department of Transport to focus on the R&D of autonomous vehicles, with aid from necessary funding. The legislation is set to allocate an approx. USD 100 million from motor safety grants.

Applications of Blind Spot Cameras and Side Collision Cameras
Blind spot camera and side collision camera are the other types of automotive cameras that help drivers avoid fatal incidences and gain better control of the vehicle. Blind spot cameras are gaining prominence as a replacement for side-view mirrors in next-generation vehicles. They alert the driver of sudden lane change or help him/her avoid accidents in lane changing. With sensors on the side and rear of the passenger car or commercial vehicle, a blind spot camera alerts drivers of vehicles approaching alongside.
According to a study conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), as of 2017, the U.S. accounted for an approx. 1.2 million collision incidents with large animals, whereas the number of collisions was about 1 million in Europe. Any vehicle – be it a passenger car or commercial vehicle – is not designed to withstand such an impact, especially at high speeds. Thus, enhanced safety features such as side collision cameras are the best bet in preventing collisions.

Increasing Sale of Cars to Drive Growth of Passenger Vehicles Segment
The increasing production of passenger vehicles globally offers opportunities for the adoption of automotive cameras to reduce motor fatalities and enhance passenger safety; the below table portrays the production of passenger vehicles in the fourth quarter of 2018 for North America, Europe, South America, Asia, and Africa.
Region Production (Million Units)
North America 7,650,006
Europe 18,737,586
South America 2,622,331
Asia 43,432,201
Africa 747,788

Source: International Organization of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers
India has a strong automotive market, which presents growth prospects for the automotive camera market; however, the lack of regulations mandating the adoption of automotive cameras hinders adoption on a large scale, limiting it to their use as mere accessories. According to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), India accounted for about 147,913 deaths in association with road accidents in 2017 alone. The regulatory scenario in the country is expected to change in the future, favoring the adoption of vehicle security measures such as the adoption of automotive cameras.

Application in Commercial Vehicles Lower Compared to That in Passenger Vehicles Due to the Relative Volume in Terms of Units
In terms of security, passenger vehicles have always remained in the limelight, which can largely be attributed to the fact that they account for a relatively higher market share when compared with commercial vehicles. According to the International Organization of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers (OICA), the sales of passenger vehicles accounted for 68,690,468 units for 2018, whereas that of commercial vehicles accounted for a mere 26,365,470 units. Apart from the vast share held by passenger vehicles, safety concerns play a key role in directing focus towards these vehicles; however, over the years, commercial vehicles have gradually gained attention from a safety and security perspective.

Emphasis on Enhances Safety in Automotive to Drive Market Growth in North America
With an alarming increase in collision rates across the U.S. and Canada, among other countries in the region, automotive cameras have emerged as an integral component in ensuring vehicle and passenger safety. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the year 2017 saw about 37,133 motor fatalities in the U.S. In the same year, the Government of Canada registered an approx. of 1,679 motor fatalities. In tandem with other regions, North America is focusing on building its automotive sector, with an emphasis on enhanced required safety and security levels.

Presence of Key Manufacturers to Drive Market Growth in Europe
Europe has a large automotive sector marked by several key manufacturers. According to the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA), automobile manufacturers operate an approx. of 309 vehicle assembly and production plants across 27 countries in Europe. These manufacturers not only supply the domestic market but also are observed to be actively exporting automobiles across the globe. Countries that consider automotive cameras as a mandatory and integral part of vehicles, such as North America, and regions such as APAC, South America, the Middle East, and Africa that consider such automotive cameras as an aftermarket accessory offer several growth opportunities for the market.

China and Japan to Register Significant Growth in Asia-Pacific
Countries such as China, Japan, Australia, and India are focusing on the development of their automotive sectors, among other verticals. With Europe and North America actively adopting measures to actualize the idea of autonomous vehicles or driverless mobility, countries with well-established automobile sectors such as China and Japan are working towards meeting global levels and sustaining presence amid stiff competition.
China has drafted ‘The Connected Vehicle Industry Development Plan 2020’, which stipulates at least 50% vehicles to be equipped with partial assistance (PA), driver assistance (DA), or conditional assistance (CA), in turn providing scope for the application of automotive cameras. The ‘Action Plan for Realizing Automated Driving’ drafted by the Panel of China on Business Strategies for Automated Driving outlines an ideal future vision for autonomous driving, providing untapped opportunities for the automated camera market.

Brazil to Drive Market Growth in South America, With Impetus From a Recovering Automotive Industry
Recovery in Brazil’s automotive sector is expected to provide a fillip to the demand for automotive cameras in the region. Post a four-year-long recession in the automotive sector, Brazil observed marked growth in 2017. According to the Presidency of the Republic of Brazil, in 2017, automobile production increased by 25.2%, producing about 2.7 million vehicles with 9.2% growth in sales. The positive environment fosters the adoption of Autonomous Emergency Braking Systems (AEBSs), which help avoid imminent collisions; these systems are integrated with camera systems and thus, offer growth prospects for the automotive camera market in the country. Market growth in Argentina can be attributed to government initiatives favoring the growth of the automotive industry.

Favorable Regulatory Scenario in the Middle East and Africa
The automotive sector in Middle Eastern countries such as the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Saudi Arabia, and Abu Dhabi, among others, is observing a shift towards a service-oriented model with a focus on customer safety and experience. Several countries stipulate that vehicles be equipped with anti-lock braking systems, as these systems are linked with front or forward-facing cameras. Such a regulatory scenario will bolster the demand for automotive cameras. Countries in the region are also developing frameworks to provide an impetus to the automotive industry, subsequently creating growth prospects for equipment, components, and fittings used in the industry, such as automotive cameras. For instance, in 2018, the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry announced the formation of the Automotive Manufacturers Business Group, which will explicitly focus on developing Dubai’s automotive sector. According to the International Trade Administration, South Africa imports automotive from countries such as Germany, the U.S., the U.K., and China; thus, car models in the country have similar safety features incorporated by the respective manufacturers.
