レポート概要

The Europe activated carbon market is expected to register a CAGR of 4.90%, during the forecasted period, 2018-2023. Growing automotive consumption, along with augmented usage of activated carbon due to mercury control for air purification is expected to drive the market during the forecasted period.
Augmenting Prominence for Air Pollution Control (Specially in Mercury Removal)

Activated carbon injection is projected to be the primary technology used for mercury removal from coal-fired power plants, cement plants, solid waste incinerators, and industrial boilers. Powdered activated carbon systems are one of the dominant technologies in control of mercury emissions from coal-fired power plant flue gas. The power generated from combustible fuels (coal, oil and natural gas) accounted for a share of more than 48% in Europe. The mercury emissions emitted from the energy production and emission accounts for almost 40%, among the total mercury emissions from different sources. Hence, the increasing emission standards and concerns over air pollution control in the region are expected to boost the demand for activated carbon during the forecast period.

Growing Demand for Powdered Activated carbon (PAC)

Powdered activated carbon is the majorly used type of activated carbon, accounting for nearly 50% of the total activated carbon usage, in 2017. PACs can be added as powder or slurries in the water treatment plants in order to get rid of organic chemicals present in the water, as well as to improve the taste and odor of potable water. In the petroleum industry, PACs are finding increasing applications as they efficiently replace conventional treatment techniques such as activated sludge, which are usually effected by the presence of recalcitrant organic compounds in the process. Other applications of PACs are witnessed in Fruit juices, and for enhancing the flavor of food additives and removal of color, protein, foam, or hydroxyl methyl furfural (HMF) from sweeteners.

Germany to Dominate the Market

In Germany, activated carbon is majorly used for waste water treatment and automotive sectors. The market is expected to increase at a healthy rate because of increase in the scrubbing operations for environmental safety and increasing demand for waste water treatment technologies. Germany has the highest waste water reprocessing and recycling rate in Europe. Germany has more than 6,900 municipal wastewater disposal companies and a total of 10,000 wastewater treatment plants. Moreover, Germany has also become a one of the major exporters of sewage technologies in the region. Furthermore, the stringent regulations in the country on air pollution caused by automobiles are increasing the demand for activated carbon by the automobile manufacturers. In response to this, Germany has launched a scheme to retrofit its diesel public buses with exhaust-scrubbing systems thereby increasing the demand for activated carbon.

Major Players: Calgon Carbon Corporation, Cabot Corporation, Osaka Gas Chemicals Co. Ltd., and Kurary Co. Ltd., amongst others.

Notable Developments in the Market

October, 2017: Cabot Corporation reduced activated carbon manufacturing plant in Texas
