レポート概要

The European pea protein market records a revenue of USD of 24.7 million in 2016 and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 7.8% during the forecast period (2018-2023).
Mainly produced from peas cultivated in Europe and North America, pea protein is extracted from yellow pea (Pisum sativum) which represents a sustainable protein source and an alternative to the consumption of meat.

Europe Pea Protein Market Dynamics

The vegan diet is given preference among a large section of the developed economies such as the European Union. Various reasons like emotional attachments to animals, preventing exploitation of animals, rising health consciousness, rising incidents of lifestyle diseases like obesity, growing environmental awareness are a few factors influencing individuals to adopt a vegan or vegetarian diet.

Peas are an important grain legume, but more than 90% of pea production in Europe is used for animal feed. Currently, pea protein concentrates and isolates are trending in the pet food industry. Concentrates are becoming a popular choice over isolates because of same nutritional profile but lower cost. Concentrated pea proteins have also found use in injection-molded chews and treats. The concentrates have a bland flavor and aroma that can take on the characteristics of the remainder of the diet. Due to this reason, acceptance of pea proteins by pet owners are not as high as the level of meat proteins.

Protein is on a winning streak with customers these days. With demand coming from everywhere, it is not just popular among sports enthusiasts but among people of all strata. While animal and soy proteins continue to dominate, pea protein is now breaking into the mainstream as a serious plant-based contender. Across the globe, there is a regulatory void on the use of pea proteins in pet food and acceptance by regulatory agencies is not as straightforward. However, in Europe and other regions of the world, there are no indications that pea proteins are unacceptable.

Europe Pea Protein Market Segmentation

Europe is the second largest market for pea protein after North America with over 33% of the global market share. Convenience food sectors with high demand in the bakery sector, spiked demand for functional foods and health-conscious population contributes to the demand for protein-rich foods, especially pea protein and related ingredients in the region. This kind of demand influx is driving the market towards growth. The market is gradually expanding as pea proteins are gluten-free and fat-free.

Moreover, emulsifying properties, good solubility, dispersion in water, easy mixing, and fluidity of powder are all features of pea protein that are sought by food industries. This extends its use of pea protein in bakery, pastry, confectionery, dairy products and desserts. In addition, in culinary products, pea protein displays very good meat binding properties as meat extender in different applications of meats, steaks, nuggets, sauces, dishes cooked.
