The Air Traffic Management (ATM) Market is expected to register a CAGR close to 10% during the forecast period, 2018 to 2023, due to the modernization of existing airports and the development of Greenfield airports. The need for efficient, globally harmonized, and interoperable air traffic management arises due to increasing air traffic across the globe. Air travel, which was once a luxury, has transformed into a necessity, resulting in the increased number of passengers traveled. International Air Transport Association forecasts the global air passenger number will be doubled to 7.8 billion in 2036. To cater to this increase in demand, airlines are making investments to increase the fleet size. According to the FAA, there are around 5000 aircrafts in the sky at any given time. Thus, there is a vast demand for improvised Air Traffic Management Systems, which are needed to manage growing number of planes in the air. However, these new technologies are out of reach from cost-effectiveness, as huge capital is required to maintain and monitor them, since these systems are necessary for the safety of the passengers. Asia-Pacific is projected to lead the air traffic management market during the forecast period, owing to the modernization of existing airports and the development of new airports in the region. Airport modernization programs, that include increased procurement of advanced communication, surveillance equipment, and navigation, are some of the drivers identified in the global air traffic management market.

Technology Trends

The UK-based air service provider (ANSP) NATS has developed a new HMI (Human Machine Interface) for air traffic controllers that are likely to implement free route airspace and trajectory management, particularly catering to the SES (Single European Sky) Initiative. The technology is expected to revolutionize air traffic management in the country. Flight deck automation is another disruption in the domain of automation that is actively being developed.

India – The number of airports is poised to grow over the forecast period as the Government of India gave ‘in-principle’ approval for 19 Greenfield airports in the country in 2017. Of the 19 new airports, some airports would be developed under Public Private Partnership. According to IATA, India leads the world in domestic air traffic growth witnessing a 17.5% increase in 2017 compared to 23.3% increase in 2016. However, the country remained as the fastest domestic revenue air passenger in the world, for three consecutive years. For instance, on January 20th, 2018, Mumbai Airport created a world record in single-runway operations. The airport successfully handled 980 arrivals and take-offs in 24 hours. With the increase in air traffic and also, the number of airports, the country is anticipated to be a key market for air traffic management systems.
