CMOS Image Sensors are Competing with Ongoing Technological Advancements

CCDs uses a special manufacturing process to create the ability to transport charge across the chip without distortion. This process leads to very high-quality sensors in terms of fidelity and light sensitivity. CMOS chips, on the other hand, use traditional manufacturing processes to create the chip, the same processes used to make most of the microprocessors. CCDs tend to be used in cameras that mostly focus on high-quality images with a lot of pixels and excellent light sensitivity requirement. CMOS sensors traditionally have lower quality, lower resolution, and lower sensitivity, thus resulting in a rather low-quality image compared to CCDs. Although numerous differences exist between the two sensors, they both play the same role in the camera – they turn light into electricity. CMOS sensors are just now improving to the point where they are almost at par with CCD devices in some applications. CMOS cameras are usually less expensive and have great battery life. Thus, they are preferred in such applications where the tradeoff for image quality is possible for a longer battery life.

•August 2017 – Hamamatsu Photonics K.K. developed a new streak camera, FESCA-100, which achieves the world’s highest level of temporal resolution because of a newly developed structural design. The FESCA-100 can measure optical phenomena in 100 femtoseconds (one-quadrillionth of a second) with a temporal resolution twice as high as conventional products.
