The global high-end inertial systems market was valued at USD 3 billion in 2017, and is expected to reach USD 4.12 billion by 2023, registering a CAGR of 5.42%, over the forecast period (2018 – 2023). High-end inertial systems comprise high-performance variants of accelerometers, gyroscopes, and multi-axes integrated systems like inertial measurement units (IMU). IMUs consist of a combination of accelerometers, gyroscopes, magnetometers, and processing units. High-end inertial systems can be differentiated based on grade using performance metrics and end-user applications. Low-grade applications include commercial grade systems, such as video games, smartphones, and portable devices, while the high-grade applications include military, defense, and navigation units that need high accuracy and performance. MEMS technology has played a major role in expanding the application base for high-end inertial systems by scaling down the size and power consumption of these devices, without compromising on their performance metrics. The overall market outlook has been fairly positive, and technological innovations in fabrication and micro-machining are expected to drive the growth in this sector.

Emergence of MEMS Technology is Driving the Market

MEMS technology has brought about a paradigm shift in the evolution of high-end inertial systems. The traditional range of inertial systems was burdened by high costs and sizes. However, MEMS techniques have been able to reduce the size, power consumption, and costs of these systems considerably by increasing the surface volume density. MEMS IMUs are being fabricated on planar substrates, leading to a marginal decrease in sizes and costs.

MEMS-driven IMUs have numerous applications ranging from defense to new commercial and industrial applications. The cost of commercial-grade MEMS IMUs has fallen considerably due to plunging component costs and increased competition in the industry. However, these devices remain elusive to small and medium scale companies. MEMS technology is expected to drive the next wave of innovations in inertial systems. Several companies have been focusing on their R&D operations to design MEMS units with enhanced capabilities. The large scale adoption of inertial systems depends heavily on MEMS systems.

Navigation High-end Accelerometers Occupy the Largest Market Share

High-end accelerometers for navigational grade applications comprise guidance systems, range finding devices, aeronautics, and stabilization units. Conventional guidance systems operate within a working range of 5 g, with a bias stability range of 6-20 mg. On the other hand, aeronautics navigational systems operate with a greater working range of 2-15 g, with a bias stability of around 1 mg. High-end accelerometers are also deployed in stabilization systems with a working range of 2 g and a bias stability of less than 2 mg.

Navigation grade applications for MEMS accelerometer can be found in bogie monitoring, speed control, tilt control, and positioning monitoring systems employed in tactical and commercial transport units. They are also increasingly used in shock monitoring and train positioning systems. In the field of aviation, accelerometers are widely used as a part of inertial navigation systems, such as AHRS, to offer greater performance and stability. As stated earlier, the configuration of accelerometers in high-end IMUs acts as a differentiating factor in high-end IMUs.

North America Accounts for the Largest Market Share

North America held the highest share of both high-end IMU and accelerometers in 2017. The primary demand for high-end inertial systems is observed in the maritime sector and the aircraft industry, for both commercial and defense purposes. The United States allocates the maximum budget for defense spending. Nonetheless, the decrease in military spending is expected to be off-set by steady growth in aerospace and land-based applications in the United States. A strong increase in the production of helicopters and commercial aircrafts drives the market for high-end inertial systems. The huge aerospace industry of the United States exports more than 60% of the total aerospace production. Many foreign firms are attracted to the United States aerospace market as it is the largest in the world, employing a skilled and hospitable workforce, with diverse offerings and extensive distribution systems.
