The inertial systems market in marine applications is expected to register a CAGR of 10.24% over the forecast period (2018 – 2023). The market report covers various holistic solutions offered by the leading vendors of the market. The scope of this report is limited to the end-user application, such as hydrographic surveying, undersea cable & pipe laying, buoy & current monitoring, autonomous underwater vehicles, yacht & ferry stabilization, and dredging, among others. The regions considered in the report include North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and Rest of the World.

Inertial systems are used in a variety of marine applications, like navigation and control. The marine inertial navigation system is used to provide accurate positioning information, the marine attitude & heading reference unit (AHRS) and gyrocompass provide high-accuracy heading, pitch, roll, heave, and rate-of-turn data.

The growth of inertial systems can be attributed to the increasing demand for accuracy in navigation and the emergence of MEMS systems.

Navigational Systems to Hold a Major Market Share

Inertial measurement units (IMUs) used for naval applications operate with a bias stability of 0.05– 0.5 °/h for short-term navigation and 0.0001- 0.01 °/h for high-grade navigation. The bias-stability configuration relies on the nature of the end-user applications. As high-end IMU offer high reliability in testing conditions, while other navigational systems are prone to errors, naval applications hold a dynamic market for high-end IMU, and it is witnessing a high growth rate. The new range of high-grade navigational systems is effectively integrating high-end IMUs with GPS systems for offering guidance and navigation control.

The other applications include high-speed trains, freight transport ships, stabilization systems used in navigation systems, underwater vehicles, and other forms of autonomous vehicles. Moreover, high-end navigational systems for tactical grade applications combined IMUs, GNSS receiver, processing units, data loggers, and enhanced Kalman filter to offer dead reckoning navigation reading using odometers. These systems make use of anti-jamming techniques for offering machine control even in harsh environments.

Technological advancements and evolving need for high-accuracy land/naval navigational systems are driving the growth of this market. Even though major markets, like North America and Europe, have curtailed their defense spending over the last few years, this has not affected the IMU component market.

High Investments in Border & Maritime Security to Drive the Market

The defense application dominated the market in 2017 and is expected to do the same during the forecast period with small-diameter missiles, underwater navigators, and unmanned aerial vehicles being the demanding applications and main beneficiaries of high-end MEMS sensors in military applications. The US is poised to spend USD 10 billion on ports and borders to curb illegal immigration. The US is also planning to add 5,000 agents to both the Border Patrol and Customs & Border Protection (CBP).

The spending on border & maritime security will be dominated by Asia-Pacific. The ongoing conflicts between countries in the Asia-Pacific region will result in higher spending towards the protection of land and maritime boundaries. In addition, strategic competition between the rapidly growing military forces of China and India is further expected to fuel investment in the sector. Moreover, the Chinese maritime force projection in the South China Sea and North Korea’s repeated demonstration of nuclear arms have resulted in conflicts with neighboring countries, which in turn, has led nations to enhance their respective maritime and border security capabilities to defend their interests.

The UK is also planning to strengthen its maritime security to prevent maritime insecurity proliferating ahead of the withdrawal of international naval forces and to improve maritime policing, judicial & penal capacity, and maritime domain awareness.

All this is increasing the demand for IMUs and AHRS systems. The major players are producing various products using INS, AHRS, and gyroscopes to perform hydrographic surveying, vessel guidance, 3D steering & submarine control, data management, and many more operations.

Key Developments

•November 2017 – Raytheon Anschütz launched new PilotStar NX. PilotStar NX featured advanced functions, such as a trim mode and a preset heading function, for specialized operations of workboats. Its main characteristic is the large 7” touch TFT display, which offers graphical user support with heading and rudder plot as well as track data for simple adjustment of the autopilot parameters in order to achieve the best steering performance in all conditions and efficient fuel consumption.
•October 2017 – KVH launched next-generation, advanced maritime broadband network, joined by service partner, Intelsat S.A. The network will triple, and in some cases increase by a multiple of six, the data speeds for its maritime customers.

The major players includes – SAFRAN GROUP, HONEYWELL INTERNATIONAL INC., WATSON INDUSTRIES, INC., RAYTHEON ANSCHÜTZ GMBH, SBG SYSTEMS, ANALOG DEVICES INC., and BOSCH SENSORTEC GMBH, amongst others.
