Monochloroacetic acid, the general industrial name for chloroacetic acid, is a colorless and crystalline structured mass, highly soluble in water. The chemical is reacted with ethanol, methanol, disulphide, chloroform, ether and a number of hydrocarbons and chlorinated-hydrocarbons, to make different solutions that find use in many applications. These are used in solid-crystallized, solid-flaked, powdered, and liquid forms.

China alone holds more than half of the consumption of monochloroacetic acid. The largest demand is in the form of carboxy methyl cellulose (CMC), which is majorly produced by China. Moreover, China is the major producer of glyphosate herbicide, which uses glycine. The demand is expected to increase from the Asia-Pacific region, especially from China, India, Bangladesh, and the South-East Asian countries, in the coming years. The growth in population and increasing demand in the agro-based products are the major driving factors for the Asia-Pacific market.
Cellulose Application to Dominate the Market
The major application for monochloroacetic acid is production of Carboxymethylcellulose (CMC). It is used in numerous applications including, detergents, cosmetics & pharmaceuticals, etc. as thickening agent in aqueous systems. China in Asia-Pacific region is the largest producer of CMC followed by Western Europe. May 2017: AkzoNobel and chemicals manufacturing company Atul, formally agreed to the joint venture partnership announced last year for the production of monochloroacetic acid (MCA) in India. The companies will establish a new plant at Atul’s facility in Gujarat by first quarter 2019, with each partner holding a 50% stake in the joint venture, to be registered as “ANAVEN”.
