The global nisin market is expected to register a CAGR of 4.8% during the forecast period.

Recently in December 2017, EFSA has given green signal to extend the use of food preservative nisin (E234) to include unripened cheese and heat-treated meat products. Notably, this opinion was requested by Dupont Nutrition Biosciences in March 2016

Some of the key players in the packaging industry such as Mondi Group (Austria), BioCote (U.K.) etc are incorporating anti-microbial preservative like nisin as packaging ingredient in ready to eat products. These are often referred to as anti-microbial packaging materials and are part of recent technology “Active Packaging”.

Market Dynamics

Nisin is effective against wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria which is key driving factor for the growth of nisin market. Additionally, nisin has surface active molecules which can easily bind with different compounds thus killing bacterial cells which adhere to it. Due to its property functions, it is also regarded as significant antimicrobial agent in the active packaging. Hence, the growing popularity of active packaging is fueling the growth of global nisin market.

The major restraint for the market growth of nisin is its sensitive and crucial production process. Also, the end product is adversely affected in case there is an increase in lactate concentration beyond a standard level and the decrease in pH. Another, major challenge in the nisin market growth is its high cost i.e. being a natural preservative, it is at least 10 times costlier than chemical preservatives. Thus, all these factors will hinder the growth of nisin market growth.

There is an enormous demand for safe and convenience food in the developed economies such as North America and Europe as well as increasing awareness about use of natural preservatives. This will serve as huge opportunity for companies to develop new products. Also, the companies will target the emerging markets in regions such as Asia-Pacific.

Market Segmentation

Nisin, an important bacteriocin is commercially used as natural preservative in nearly 50 countries. Major regulatory authorities such as World Health Organization (WHO) and Food & Agriculture Organization (FAO) has approved nisin to be used as a natural preservative against microbes.

The global nisin market can be segmented on the basis of its application in several sectors such as Bakery, poultry, beverages including brewery, and canned food. The major utility is in the meat product segment owing to its highest consumption in geographies like North America and Europe. This is followed by its application in dairy products segment especially in cheese manufacturing.

Regional Analysis

North America contributed the largest value to the global nisin market. However, Asia-Pacific is expected to witness rapid growth by 2023, owing to demand of natural preservative. Comparatively, the nisin market in Western Europe is more established and stable with the presence of key players such as Royal DSM N.V. and Danisco A/S. These players also dominate in the global nisin market, constituting major share. The nisin market in APEJ (Asia-Pacific except Japan) is evolving and growing at a faster rate with new entrants in the market. Additionally, countries like China is taking stricter regulatory measures due to the lack of quality standards when compared to the European or other international counterparts, as it affects the export of nisin to other west region countries.

MAJOR PLAYERS: DANISCO (EUROPE), ROYAL DSM N.V (NETHERLAND), UAB BALTVITA (EUROPE), SIVELEE B.V (NETHERLAND), and ZHEJIANG SILVER-ELEPHANT BIO-ENGINEERING CO. LTD. (CHINA), amongst others.

Key Developments:

• On July 27, 2017, ImmuCell Corporation announced closure of an equity investment by issuing 200,000 common shares at USD 5.25 per share to Sandra F. Pessin and Brian L. Pessin, raising gross proceeds of USD1,050,000. This is done to complete the construction process of nisin production facility and installation of the related equipment.
