A new technology called the pedestrian detection system automatically scans the road ahead and sends notifications to pedestrians and warnings to the drivers if the pre-decided distance is not maintained. The pedestrian detection system forms a part of the advanced driving assistance systems (ADASs) since they help the driver in checking accidents and provide safer driving circumstances. This technology assists drivers at night, thus forming an essential component of the driver assistance systems in the automotive industry. Stringent regulations in developing countries provide an opportunity for the growth of pedestrian detection systems. With the advent of autonomous cars, the demand for research & development in the pedestrian detection systems has increased. It is projected that the market for fully autonomous vehicles will grow to USD 6 billion by 2025 (Source: Statista).

The pedestrian detection system consists of four modules – image capture, segmentation, tracking and warning, and a display module. The radars and cameras, typically fitted in places on the vehicles from where spotting pedestrians can be easier, for example, the front and back of the vehicle on the windshields and bumpers respectively, are operational at a range of speeds and can go higher than 50 miles per hour. Pedestrian detection systems offered by companies like Bosch, can easily be integrated with existing vehicle fronts and do not alter the vehicle’s external appearance.

The existing pedestrian detection technology is slow and requires a high computing power. However, research & development by different automotive manufacturers and universities in the developed nations, such as the United States and United Kingdom, are expected to provide cost-effective and better-performing systems in the coming years. Research and innovation in sensors, cameras, radars, and other value-added components are equipping the cars for increased safety of pedestrians.

According to WHO, road traffic injuries are the tenth leading cause of death globally, responsible for around 1.3 million deaths each year. Because of the increasing number of pedestrian fatalities globally, governments of developed and developing nations are imposing stringent rules that encourage the use of technologies that focus on road safety and security. This drives the manufacturers to invest in research and setting & scaling of manufacturing sensor-based technologies and other automobile technologies across the world. Apart from the rules imposed by the government, high disposable incomes and demand for cars with such advanced features also drive the pedestrian detection market. With the augmentation of technology that can sense the presence of pedestrians in the path of the cars, earlier available only in high-priced cars like the Mercedes S-class, it is obvious that automation is coming to automobiles and in a big way.

The high cost of systems and associated components make it impossible to integrate sensors for pedestrian detection in mass-market cars; ongoing research, inadequate research in updating existing research, and a few other factors contribute to the bottlenecks in this market. The report segments the global pedestrian detection systems market by type, region, and vendors.

An increasing number of automobile manufacturers, such as Ford and Toyota, are integrating sensors for pedestrian detection to enhance their product offerings. While most manufacturers are integrating sensors and cameras in new cars, other sensor-based companies are offering add-on sensors that can be used in cars without pre-installed pedestrian detection systems and include names like Mobileye, among others. The global market for sensors, critical to pedestrian detection by automobiles, is ever-expanding. The largest market for automotive sensors is Europe, while the highest growth is witnessed in the Asia-Pacific region.

The pedestrian detection systems market is expected to reach a CAGR of over 30% during 2018-2023. The pedestrian detection technology market is segmented based on the type of system used for detection, into video, infrared, hybrid, and others. By geography, the market is segmented into North America, South America, APAC, Europe, and Middle East & Africa. According to the European Commission for Mobility and Transport, in some of Europe’s largest cities, the pedestrian and cyclist traffic makes up between 20-40% of all travel in heavily populated areas and nearly half of the fatalities that occurred were from a vehicle striking a pedestrian. In the United States, this number jumped to a staggering 75%. Therefore, Europe and the US form the major markets for pedestrian detection technology.

The pedestrian detection market consists of several OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) and suppliers, such as Mobileye, Delphi, Bosch, TRW, and DENSO, among others. Automotive manufacturers like Toyota, Volvo, BMW, FLIR, Mercedes, etc. have this technology in majority of the high-end automobiles they manufacture. There are also a few other suppliers that exclusively focus on the technology in the market. Vendor competition in the market is intense and the projected growth of the market in the coming years will further increase the competition among providers. Nissan and Bosch are dominating the market in several regions in the OEM and suppliers segment, respectively.

Key Developments in the Market:

• March 2017: Ford introduces tech that can automatically brake for pedestrians at night; the system scans the road ahead – and pavement for people who might step into the road. The same will be implemented on the next-generation Fiesta in Europe. In North America, the new technology will debut on the 2018 Ford F-150 and 2018 Ford Mustang.
• November 2017: Apple reveals a new solution, VoxelNet, which uses complex computer vision and artificial intelligence to carry out pedestrian detection function.

Major Players: TOYOTA, VOLVO, BMW, FLIR, MERCEDES, MOBILEYE, DELPHI, BOSCH, TRW, DENSO, amongst others.
