The SSD caching market was valued at USD 17.95 billion in 2017 and is expected to reach USD 41.77 million by 2023, at a CAGR of 15.11% over the forecast period (2018-2023). The scope of the report includes insights on the solutions offered by major players, including providers of hardware, professional services, and integration solutions. The regions included in this study are North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, Latin America, and Middle East & Africa. The study also considers various end-user applications, such as enterprise data storage, networking, embedded technologies, server, mobile, etc.

SSDs are like HDD in terms of being non-volatile storage mediums but instead of spinning disks, data is stored in a series of microchips that are interconnected. This makes the access to memory much faster and causes the boot times to reduce drastically.

Flexibility of Using in Varying Conditions and Enhanced User Experience

SDDs have no moving parts as in the traditional HDDs, and hence, work faster with lessened boot times and latency reduced to the minimum. In order to offer the benefits of the SSD technology with high storage, Intel came up with a technology called SSD caching or Smart Response Technology. With this technology there is a HDD to take up bulk of the storage needs, and the apps or programs that are frequently accessed are cached and stored on the SSD, typically with lower storages like 20 GB, 64 GB, etc., which when accessed the next time, boots faster as if using a SSD.

This technology offers flexibility of high-capacity storage coupled with faster access speeds of SSD, ultimately resulting in a better user experience. The usual time-consuming tasks can be accomplished much faster, and all these can be made available to the user at a little additional cost. The fractional cost of SSD cache drives as compared to the full SSD storage drives is expected to make SSD caching an attractive alternative for budget users requiring faster rates of data access, till the price of SSDs comes at par with HDDs.

Personal Computers/Laptops are One of the Major Application Segments for the Market

When smartphones evolved and desktop sales declined, the SSD market helped the personal computer market through laptops. SSDs are not made up of mechanical parts such as platter and actuator, making SSDs more durable than HDDs. SSDs can withstand more shock and damage, helping keep data safe. One of the many advantages that SSD offers the users is that it consumes less power. It uses less than 2W as compared to 6W in HDD. This helps the laptop run longer on battery. This results in reduced frequency of charging, causing the battery to last longer. The SSDs used in laptops have faster computing power than HDDs. The data access and transfer speeds are very high. Having no mechanical parts, SSDs are lighter and quieter than traditional HDDs, making them ideal choice for personal computing.

Key Developments in the Market

• March 2018 – ADATA Technology launched the XPG SX950U2.5” SATA 6Gb/s Gaming SSD, which utilizes the latest 3D NAND Flash memory and is driven by a high-speed SMI controller to reach large capacities of up to 960GB with significantly higher read/write speeds up to 560/520MB per second.

The major players include – OCZ SYNAPSE, SANDISK, MUSHKIN, INTEL CORPORATION, EDGE MEMORY, MYDIGITALSSD, CORSAIR COMPONENTS, INC., TRANSCEND INFORMATION INC., SUPER TALENT TECHNOLOGY, and PLEXTOR, amongst others.
