The MEMS automobile sensor Market was valued at USD 1816.45 million in 2020 and is expected to reach USD 4080.23 million by 2026, recording a CAGR of 14.61%, over the forecast period 2021-2026. The increase in demand for safety applications and robust, reliable, and cost-effective sensors will drive the MEMS automobile sensor market in the forecast period.

– The growing demand for safety and security in automobiles is one of the main factors playing a vital role in the growth of the market. According to the World Health Organization, globally, more than 1.55 million people are killed in road accidents every year, and about 50 million people get injured. MEMS sensors play a critical role in improving the safety features of vehicles and act as catalysts for the growth of the market.
– The emergence of electric vehicles (EVs) in the industry has dramatically impacted the demand for and distribution of pressure and magnetic sensors. It is expected to increase the demand in the long-term further. Increasing sales of electric cars are thereby increasing the demand for sensors, along with the surge in sensors for used battery monitoring, and various positioning and detection of moving parts of the automobiles.
– Mandated safety systems, such as tire pressure monitoring systems (TPMS) and electronic stability control (ESC), attained full implementation in new vehicles in major automotive markets. The United States, for instance, is currently driving the revenue growth for MEMS sensors.
– Sensors and actuators are among the critical components of automotive electronic control systems. Hence, the type of sensors and actuators required is influenced by the needed control system function. With the advent and use cases of the engine control systems, the need for sensors on the input and the exhaust sides of the engine has become common. A manifold absolute pressure (MAP) and a manifold air temperature (MAT) sensor are also used to compute the density of air entering the engine.
– Moreover, currently, the two significant trends for the automotive industry are electrification and automation. There is the rapid integration of high-value sensing modules, such as RADAR, LIDAR, and imaging in automotive systems. As a result, the growth in MEMS sensors’ sales volume is expected to be significant during the forecast period.
– Several product innovations are made by various manufacturers to grab the multiple opportunities posed by the market. For instance, Robosense announced the world’s first public road test of a vehicle, equipped with a Smart LiDAR Sensor at CES 2020. The RS-LiDAR-M1 Smart LiDAR is the MEMS Smart LiDAR Sensor that incorporates sensor hardware, AI perception algorithms, and IC chipsets, transforming conventional LiDAR sensors providing essential information for autonomous vehicle decision-making.
– Additionally, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the demand for automotive slowed down, along with the effect in the supply chain in the automotive parts. Over the short to medium term, the pandemic may delay the development of advanced technologies, such as autonomous driving, as automakers divert research budgets to fund immediate cash requirements. Similarly, investments in micro-mobility and shared-mobility start-ups are expected to fall and may drive market consolidation.
– India’s automobile industry, the fourth-largest globally by volume, is headed for another year of significant declines, as extended lockdowns impact production and consumer demand. According to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers, March passenger vehicle sales declined 51% Y-o-Y to 143,014 units. Two-wheeler sales fell 40% to 866,849 units, and commercial vehicles dropped 88% to 13,027 units.

Key Market Trends

Gyroscopes Type Segment to Witness a Significant Growth

– MEMS gyroscope plays a vital role in improving the safety features of vehicles. With the evolution of autonomous driving, the demand for this sensor is expected to increase multiple-fold for safety-based applications and create opportunities in the market. In March 2019, the European Commission announced a revision of the General Safety Regulations to make autonomous safety technologies a mandatory requirement for vehicles manufactured in Europe, in a bid to bring down accident levels in the region. Stringent regulations are pushing the automotive vendors to implement the latest MEMS gyroscope systems. This is creating opportunities for the market.
– MEMS sensors are often smaller in size, exhibit lower cost, and lower power than discrete sensor equivalents. Additionally, they can integrate signal conditioning circuitry in the same semiconductor package. The California Institute of Technology, in February 2019, developed a gyroscope, which can detect “phase shifts” that are 30 times smaller than current systems. This has enhanced its performance by one to two orders of magnitude. The university team developed this optical gyroscope at 500 times lower than current devices available in the market. Furthermore, its implementation in the automotive sector, the market tends to rise significantly.
– Moreover, in June 2020, Harley-Davidson filed a patent application for a gyroscopic unit that is likely to allow the bike to balance itself at extremely slow speeds and even at a standstill. In recent times, the American firm has seen a significant decline in sales, and while its recent launches and concepts have deviated from the kind of bikes that the brand is famous for, massive V-twin cruisers still account for most of its sales. Additionally, the gyroscope includes a heavy flywheel mounted to an electric motor – spinning between 10,000 and 20,000 rpm, installed inside a gimbal that moves with the roll and pitch of the bike. This further holds a significant demand, which eventually helps to gain market growth.

Asia-Pacific to Exhibit the Fastest Growth Rate

– Due to the rapidly growing automotive industry in economies, such as China and Japan, Asia-Pacific is expected to exhibit the highest growth rate in the automotive MEMS sensors market.
– The standardization of autonomous driving and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) is accelerating in China. Recently, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of the Chinese government issued the key working points of Intelligent Connected Vehicle Standardization for 2018 to promote and facilitate the development of the intelligent connected vehicles industry. The guideline has stated that more than 30 essential standards are expected to be defined by 2020 to find the systems for ADAS and low-level autonomous driving. A system of over 100 rules will be set up by 2025 for higher-level autonomous driving.
– Japan has been in the top three of the countries with most cars manufactured since the year 1960s. The country is home to some of the major automotive players, such as Toyota and Honda. These companies have an extensive presence in the country, along with their service centers.
– For instance, Suzuki Connect is an advanced integrated safety and connected car solution, which is designed to provide customers with improved safety, security, and user-friendly connected car experience. This includes vehicle tracking, emergency assistance, vehicle’s live location/movement status, service due to reminders, and driving behavior analysis. All these factors will drive the MEMS sensor market in the region.

Competitive Landscape

The MEMS automobile sensors market is fragmented in nature and consists of a significant number of global and regional players. These players are focusing on expanding their customer base across the globe. These vendors are focusing on the research and development investment in introducing new solutions, strategic alliances, and other organic & inorganic growth strategies to earn a competitive edge over the forecast period.

– In June 2020, AEye Inc., an artificial perception pioneer, announced that its 4Sight M sensor, based on patented intelligent perception system design, established a new standard for sensor reliability. In testing completed at NTS, one of the most respected testing, inspection, and certification companies in the United States, the 4Sight M scan block surpassed automotive qualification for both shock and vibe. AEye also announced the availability of 4Sight, which is a new family of advanced 1550 nm LiDAR vision systems.
– In May 2020, Murata announced that it developed a single package MEMs 6DoF (Six Degrees of Freedom) inertial sensor for safety-critical automotive applications. The SCHA600 sensor delivers centimeter-level accuracy regarding vehicle dynamics and position to ensure safe, robust, and verified autonomous driving. Qualified to the AEC-Q100 standard, it includes advanced self-diagnostic features and is compliant to the ASIL-D level – the highest automotive safety integrity level. With an Allan variance down to 0.9°/h at room temperature and gyro RMS noise level below 0.007°/s, the sensor delivers best in class performance for automotive applications regarding bias stability and noise.
