The Global Surface Disinfectant market is expected to value at USD 7,606.08 million in 2020 and USD 6,103.18 million by 2026, witnessing a CAGR of -5.92% during the forecast period.

The outbreak of COVID-19 has significantly impacted the growth of the surface disinfectant market. The usage of surface disinfectants that provide protection in healthcare facilities and protect workers performing medical procedures that expose them to patients’ respiratory systems is rising. As a result, several of the companies have now ramped up their production and are focusing on the development of new products. In April 2020, ITC launched its product “Savlon Surface Disinfectant Spray”. Thus, the demand for surface disinfectants is expected to increase during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Other factors that are driving the market growth include rising incidence of hospital-acquired infections, growing geriatric population and subsequent growth in the prevalence of chronic diseases, and the increasing number of surgical procedures. As per the study titled “Healthcare-Associated Infections—A New Pathology in Medical Practice?”, published in February 2020, about 50% of the hospital acquired infection occurs in intensive care unit. Surface disinfectants plays a crucial role in preventing these infections. Hence, with the growing burden of HAI’s, the market is expected to boost over the forecast period.

Key Market Trends

Hypochlorite is Expected to Hold Significant Market Share in the Type Segment

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), studies suggest that coronaviruses may persist on surfaces for a few hours or up to several days. This may vary under different conditions, such as the type of surface, temperature, and humidity. Due to this there has been increased focus on the disinfection of the surfaces to curb the transmission of the disease and thereby expected to accelerate the demand for hypochlorite surface disinfectants.

In March 2020, Chimcoplex received approval from the Ministry of Health, Romania for the product of 1.25% sodium hypochlorite. This is further expected to support the surface disinfectant manufacturers for production.

Furthermore, hypochlorites are available in either solid or liquid forms. The most predominant chlorine products in the United States are the aqueous solutions of 5.25% to 6.15% sodium hypochlorite, which typically is referred to as household bleach. These have an extensive spectrum of antimicrobial activity (i.e., virucidal, bactericidal, fungicidal, sporicidal, mycobactericidal), are unaffected by hard water, are fast-acting and inexpensive, generally do not leave toxic residues, remove dried or fixed organisms as well as biofilms from surfaces, and have a significantly low incidence of serious toxicity.

The increasing population of elderly patients is expected to revolutionize the delivery of healthcare services and create a greater market for disinfectants, as they are more prone to acquiring HAIs (Hospital Acquired Infections). According to the World Population Ageing 2019 (United Nations, 2019), the elderly population continues to grow at an unprecedented rate. There were about 703 million people aged 65 years or above in the world in 2019. The number of these patients are projected to be double (to reach 1.5 billion) by 2050. Hence, with the rising number of geriatric population the demand for hypochlorite surface disinfectants is also expected to boost, thereby fuelling the market growth.

North America Dominates the Market and Expected to do Same in the Forecast Period

– North America is expected to dominate the surface disinfectant market, owing to the outbreak of COVID-19 in this region which has tremendously increased the demand for surface disinfectants. In March 2020, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), United States released an expanded list of EPA-registered disinfectant products that have qualified for use against SARS-CoV-2, containing about 200 additional products and 40 new products.
– The rise in chronic diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, and others, require an extended hospital stay, hence, there is an increase in the number of cases of hospital-acquired infection in the country. According to 2019 data by the American Health Association, there were approximately 36.5 million hospital admissions in 2017. Many of these procedures were due to chronic diseases and critical procedures, like heart bypass surgery. This number is increasing, and the rate of hospital-acquired infection is also rising, resulting in the growth of the market.
– Furthermore, the number of surgeries has increased in the region over recent years. For instance, according to a report published by the ASPS (American Society of Plastic Surgeons), more than 17.7 million surgical and minimally invasive cosmetic procedures were executed in the United States in the year 2018. Therefore, owing to all these factors the region is expected to hold the largest market share in the global market during the forecast period.

Competitive Landscape

The global Surface Disinfectant market is highly competitive and consists of a number of major players. Companies like 3M Company, Cantel Medical Corporation, Ecolab, Procter and Gamble, SC Johnson Professional, Steris Corporation, The Clorox Company, Whiteley Corporation, among others, hold the substantial market share in the Surface Disinfectant market. The companies are adopting various strategies in order to grow their presence in the market. In December 2020, Godrej Consumer Products Limited has introduced product line “Godrej ProClean”, surface disinfectant solutions in the market.
