The endoscope reprocessing market was valued at approximately USD 1,716.5 million in 2020 and is expected to reach USD 2690.5 million by 2026 by registering the CAGR of about 7.8% over the forecast period, 2021-2026.

COVID-19 has shown a high risk of transmission of the virus during endoscopy surgery. Various countries have penned down several guidelines to keep all non-emergent surgeries on halt. In September 2020, the Department of Medicine A, University Medicine Greifswald, Germany conducted a survey in 48 countries and found that during the COVID-19 pandemic, all centers (99%) reduced their endoscopy volumes, the majority of the centers (85%) reported greater than 50% reduction in endoscopy volumes. This data suggested that due to a halt in endoscopy surgeries, the market is expected to experience a little negative growth. However, as the pandemic has come in the controlled state now and the vaccine has arrived in the market space, the growth is expected to resume.

The major factors for the growth of the endoscope reprocessing market include the rising cases of endoscopy-related infections, growing hospital investments in endoscopy instruments, and the rising number of diseases that require endoscopy procedures. Increased usage of endoscopic devices has been observed in disease diagnosis and treatments. The growing burden of diseases that can be detected by endoscopy has increased the demand for these devices.

As per the American Cancer Society’s estimates, the number of new colorectal cancer cases in the United States by the end of 2018 are expected to reach 97,220 and 43,030 new cases of rectal cancer. This high incidence indicates the demand for screening by colonoscopic devices or sigmoidoscopic devices, which further drives the growth of the market.

Also, as per OECD, the total number of coronary heart bypass graft procedures, which is majorly accompanied by the use of endoscope performed in the 2018 were 45,307 in Germany, 20,324 in Canada, 19,006 in France, 20,411 in Italy, and 15,818 in the United Kingdom. The increasing geriatric population, along with the high prevalence of chronic diseases worldwide, has led to the increasing number of surgeries being performed globally every year.

The growth of the market is also attributed to the rising adoption of endoscope reprossesing systems in hospitals for infection control and prevention, increasing number of endoscopy procedures, coupled with growing concerns about patient safety among clinicians, development of novel automated endoscope reprocessors, and rising aging population.

Furthermore, rising demand for surgeries with faster recovery, fewer post-surgery infections, less pain, reduced scarring, better control on bleeding, increased accuracy are anticipated to boost the demand for various endoscopy devices. Major players in the market are focusing on approval of new products to expand their product portfolio. For instance, in April 2019, Advanced Sterilization Products received United States Food and Drug Administration approval for the ASP AEROFLEX Automatic Endoscope Reprocessor. Thus, the rising number of endoscopy reprocessing devices in the market will lead to the high growth of the market.

However, dearth of skilled professional to carry out edscopic procedure and the concerns regarding the safety of reprocessed instruments are the factors expected to hinder market growth.

Key Market Trends

Automated Endoscope Reprocessors Segment is Expected to Register Good Growth Over the Forecast Period

In the recent COVID-19 period, when sterilization has become the utmost priority, these automated endoscope reprocessors have become the essential part before the endoscopic surgeries and have been increasingly adopted in hospitals and clinics. The Automated Endoscope Reprocessors are Class II devices and there is a huge demand for Automated Endoscope Reprocessors owing to the benefits associated with it.

Furthermore, the United States Food and Drug Administration (US FDA) is steadily approving upcoming Automated Endoscope Reprocessors. For instance, recently, in April 2018, Cantel Medical announced it has received 510 (k) clearance for its novel automated endoscope preprocessor. Thus, owing to the above-mentioned factors the market is expected to witness good growth over the forecast period.

The graph given below suggested the estimated number of cancer cases in the United States, Growing cancer incidence in the United States is expected to boost the demand of various endoscopic procedures for the detection and diagnosis of tumor which will ultimately lead to more adoption of endoscope reprocessing devices to sterilize these endoscope.

North America is Expected to Hold Largest Market Share over the Forecast Period

Community-based ambulatory endoscopy centers across the North American region are trying to reopen and safely resume outpatient endoscopic procedures, and the guidelines recommend reprocessing, pre-testing, and screening for COVID-19, along with other mitigation measures, for the safety of patients and staff. The impact of such changes on the workflow of endoscopy reprocessing is largely unknown, although a significant reduction in revenue stream is expected.

North America holds the majority of the share and in the North American region, the United States holds the major share. The United States is expected to be the largest endoscopy reprocessing market owing to the rising prevalence of diseases that require endoscopy procedures and the presence of better healthcare infrastructure.

According to a survey conducted in the United States, by the National Centre for Health Statistics, approximately 3.5 million Laparoscopic procedures were performed in the United States in the year 2017. The rising endoscopy procedures are expected to increase the demand for reprocessing products.

Furthermore, in the United States, there is a huge demand for minimally invasive surgeries which is leading to the increase in player base in the region along with various development by them due to leverage market opportunities.

For instance, in October 2019, Cantel Medical Corporation completed the acquisition of the Hu-Friedy Mfg. , the acquisition include the products such as highly processed medical device reprocessing system. Also, according to Globocan, in 2018, the incidence of stomach cancer in Canada was 3,244, pancreatic cancer was 5,139, and esophageal cancer was 2,619. This high rate of incidence of cancer also increased the requirement of endoscopic reprocessing devices, thereby leading to market growth. Hence, all the above mentioned factors is expected to augment the growth of the North American market over the forecast period.

Competitive Landscape

The market studied involves both the multinational and local companies owing to the large number of devices and consumables being used in the reprocessing process. Some of the market players are Advanced Sterilization Products (Johnson & Johnson Company), Cantel Medical, Custom Ultrasonics, Ecolab Inc, Endo-Technik W. Griesat, Getinge AB, Metrex Research, LLC., Olympus Corporation, STERIS plc., and Wassenburg Medical (A Member of Hoya)
