The Military Radars Market is projected to grow from USD 13.66 billion in 2020 to USD 22.58 billion in 2030, registering a CAGR of 5.15% during the forecast period (2021 – 2030).

The global aerospace and defense (A&D) manufacturing sector is undergoing an unprecedented disruption due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the defense sector is expected to remain stable, and even grow as most countries have not reduced their defense budget and remain committed to sustaining their military capabilities. Supply-side shocks are perhaps some of the most visible effects of the pandemic’s impact on the defense sector. Firms located in countries badly affected by COVID-19 or those that are dependent on supply chains located in affected countries are the immediate victims of the pandemic. For instance, Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri was forced to suspend its operations till March 2020 due to the pandemic even when it was scheduled to deliver four new corvettes to the Qatari Navy. Thus, the deliveries could be pushed back if the company extends the closure of its facilities – a probable course of action that could have been taken if Italy could not flatten its COVID-19 growth curve. Thus, due to the widespread disruption in the supply chain, some of the defense programs could face minor cost escalations and delays in the short term.

Radar is an essential component of several defense systems. The increasing use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), advanced ballistic missiles, and electronic warfare systems have forced several countries to enhance their radar capabilities. The market is driven by the advancements in range, detection, identification, and integration with other sensors, and adaptability to new missions, platforms, and environments that are driving the demand for new military radars on a global scale.

Key Market Trends

Airborne Radar Segment to Register the Highest CAGR During the Forecast Period

A modern military aircraft is designed to perform distinct mission profiles; hence the onboard radar systems must be capable to perform specifically as per the designated mission profiles. For instance, radars are used in combat aircraft to find hostile aircraft, control air-to-air missiles, rockets, and other onboard weapons. Similarly, in a bomber aircraft, radar is used to find surface targets, fixed or moving, and to navigate and avoid obstacles. An increase in the global aerial fleet has led to a rise in the demand for airborne radar and has fostered significant investments towards the development of advanced radar systems that can effectively be used against stealth technology-enabled combat aircraft. Moreover, the cost-effectiveness and ease of operations of unmanned platforms, when compared to manned platforms, have aided the rapid adoption of UAVs in defense applications (for both surveillance and attack operations). Unmanned platforms are largely being deployed by military organizations in conflict regions across the world. Additionally, the Tethered Aerostat Radar Systems are being used as a low-level airborne ground surveillance system in few countries. This renders a positive outlook for the airborne radar segment of the market during the forecast period.

Asia-Pacific to Witness Highest Growth During the Forecast Period

Countries in the Asia-Pacific region, such as China and India, are investing heavily toward strengthening their defense capabilities, and they are expected to continue the same during the forecast period. As of January 2021, China was testing the KJ-600 surveillance aircraft that is widely speculated to be capable of detecting stealth aircraft such as the F-22 and the F-35. The aircraft is envisioned to be commissioned as the People Liberation Army’s (PLA’s) carrier-based early warning system. The Indian Air Force (IAF) is focusing to undertake the multirole fighter aircraft project under which it is planning to acquire 114 combat aircraft worth around USD 20 billion. As of January 2021, the IAF has already issued the Request for Information for the tender and would be soon moving a proposal for getting the Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) before the Defence Ministry for the multi-billion-dollar project which would enable it to acquire 4.5 plus generation aircraft in large numbers to match the capabilities of the multi-role Rafale fighters. Since 2017, South Korea has been operating the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD), a transportable, ground-based missile defense system. In May 2020, South Korea announced adopting the new advanced interceptor missiles for the fielded THAAD systems. In the THAAD system, the radar intercepts an incoming missile, and the threat is identified by those manning the system, who then fire a projectile from a truck, called the interceptor, at the missiles. Japan is reportedly seeking to devise a new National Defense Program to develop new missile defense systems and replace the currently fielded Aegis systems by the end of 2021. Such developments will foster a rapid growth of the market in Asia-Pacific during the forecast period.

Competitive Landscape

The global military radars market is highly competitive and is marked by the presence of many prominent players competing for a larger market share. Lockheed Martin Corporation, Northrop Grumman Corporation, Saab AB, Leonardo S.p.A., and Airbus SE are some of the major players in the market. The stringent safety and regulatory policies in the defense segment are expected to restrict the entry of new players. Furthermore, since a contract for radars requires high technological expertise and spans over a period of several years, careful identification and continuous monitoring of associative risks are required to be undertaken to assess their effects on the operational parameters of the manufacturing company. The assessment includes consideration for technical requirements, the listing of scheduled and associated tasks, and detailed cost analysis. Furthermore, the sales of military technology-based platforms such as armored vehicles, missile defense systems, etc. are primarily influenced by the prevalent economic situations in dominant markets. Hence, in periods of economic downturn, purchases may be subjected to deferral or cancellation and a relatively slower rate of adoption, which in turn, can adversely affect the market dynamics. Moreover, the contracts are often subjected to include offset clauses which enhances the risks pertaining to timely completion of the project. Since the associated risks regarding the technical aspects, scheduling of activities and costs are subjected to change based on macroeconomic factors and subsequently influence the associative profits of the associated parties in a contract.
