The exoskeleton market is expected to register a CAGR of 12.5% during the forecast period from 2020-2026.

The COVID-19 pandemic is likely to have a slight negative impact on the market. The impact of the COVID-19 on the market studied is attributed to the scenario of lockdown in 2020. Due to the outbreak, the majorly affected population is the geriatric group who use exoskeleton the most, and as all the rehabilitation centers are either closed or partly open, people do not have an option to approach these even in an emergency situation. The training and delivery are also limited until all conditions are deemed. In addition, appointments are on hold and as the situation gets to be better, rescheduling of training programs may occur that had been planned for 2020 as needed. Many countries are still in lockdown now and have also suspended trades with other countries, leading to a decline in the orders of exoskeletons in the market. There is an immediate impact on direct sales activities, which may impact many of the company sales of major players.

The major factors propelling the market growth are the rising prevalence of stroke, increasing adoption of the exoskeleton, and growing geriatric population at a global level are some of the key factors anticipated to influence the market growth over the forecast period. With the increasing number of disabled and aged people, there has been an increase in the demand for robotic rehabilitation around the world. In recent years, the demand for physical therapy services has grown, partly because of the aging population. The role of technology in healthcare has become evident with the enhanced rate of survival from medical disorders, such as stroke. Robotic rehabilitation and assistive technologies, therefore, promise to ease stress on the physiotherapy staff and control expenses while refining patients’ quality of life.

There has been a growing demand for these robotic rehabilitation devices that is showing an upward trajectory as the prevalence of disability around the world is increasing. According to the WHO 2018 statistics, over a billion people are being estimated to live with some form of disability. This corresponds to about 15% of the world’s population. Between 110 million (2.2%) and 190 million (3.8%) people 15 years and older have significant difficulties in their functioning. More importantly, the report states that the disabled population is expanding, mainly owing to the rising geriatric population. For example, the UN’s population estimates that the global geriatric population is expected to reach 2.1 billion by 2050. Furthermore, the rates of disability are increasing, in part due to ageing populations and an increase in chronic health conditions. Therefore the applications of robotic rehabilitation are growing fast, as is the market for these systems. One example is a robot developed at McGill University that helps wheelchair-bound patients to rise and walk. It supports in gait training and neuro-rehabilitation. Other researchers and companies are also found developing products using robotics and 3D printing to help patients with movement disorders from an impaired spinal cord or due to stroke, Parkinson’s disease, and multiple sclerosis. In addition, there are also numerous hospitals that have started using robotics within their rehabilitation centers. Hence, all these factors are expected to drive the overall market.

Key Market Trends
Mobile Segment is Expected to Hold the Largest Share of Market in the Product Type Over the Forecast Period
Mobile exoskeletons can be worn outside or in a person’s home. They require a battery pack and light motors and controllers that are fitted in a limited, compact space. This factor makes the designing of mobile exoskeletons highly complicated and expensive. Mobile exoskeletons support the powered hip and knee motion to help individuals with spinal cord injuries to stand and walk. Exoskeletons can cover the entire body or even a specific body segment, such as the ankle or the hip. They also consist of tethered exoskeletons that are suspended on an overhead guide rail, supported by a metal frame on wheels, or the exoskeleton can be directly supported by a mobile robot. These tethered exoskeletons also have large motors and controllers and none of their weight is distributed to the user. They are also gaining increasing popularity in the market due to their lightweight construction, as compared to the bulky metal or plastic exoskeletons. According to an article titled “Mobile Exoskeleton for Spinal Cord Injury: Development and Testing”, eLEGS was developed for people who have lost the ability to walk due to paralysis or other injuries. The device is a mobile exoskeleton with actuated sagittal plane hip and knee joints. It supports the user and moves their legs through a natural gait.

The device uses a multi-leveled controller that consists of a state machine to determine the user’s intended motion, a trajectory generator to establish desired joint behavior, and a low-level controller to calculate individual joint controller output. The system can be controlled by a physical therapist or by the user. The advantages and benefits while using mobile exoskeletons are expected to boost market growth.

North America is Expected to Hold a Significant Share of the Market Over the the Forecast Period
The key factors responsible for the large share of the North American region includes the high purchasing power of patients, growing geriatric population, and presence of public and private organizations offering grants & funds for the development of technologically advanced products.

According to the 2018 estimates by the Internet Stroke Center, stroke is the leading cause of serious, long-term disabilities in the United States. Approximately 17 million Americans suffer from stroke every year, and more than one million survivors sustain functional limitations in their daily activities due to stroke. More than 50% of stroke survivors experience long-term walking impairment, due to hemiplegia or hemiparesis. Impaired ambulation due to hemiparesis or hemiplegia is associated with increased fall risk, limited community participation, and an overall decrease in the quality of life. Furthermore, the increasing prevalence of spinal cord injury (SCI) is one of the leading factors that may increase the adoption of the exoskeleton in the United States. According to the National Spinal Cord Injury Statistical Center (NSCISC), approximately 12,500 new cases of spinal cord injury (SCI) were reported in the United States in 2015. In 2018, the number of cases of SCI was nearly 17,700 and around 17,730 in 2019. Currently, about 363,000 people in the country are living with these injuries. Thus, a rise in the spinal cord injury- (SCI) and stroke-associated disability factor is expected to boost the growth of the market in the country, in the coming years.

Competitive Landscape
The market is moderately consolidated. Some of the key players in the market studied are Cyberdyne, Ekso Bionics Holdings, Rewalk Robotics, Bionik Laboratories and among others. Therefore the increasing investments by these players in the development of new and innovative products and FDA approvals on their products are supporting the market growth. For example, in January 2020, Bioservo Technologies announced the launch of its Ironhand 1.6 version for an optimized user experience for its patients.
