The Automotive Collision Avoidance System market was valued at USD 41 Billion in 2020 and is expected to reach USD 82 Billion by 2026, registering a CAGR of 12.11 % during the forecast period.

The Covid-19 pandemic had a severe impact on the Automotive Collision Avoidance systems market. The low automotive sales registered in 2020, indicated the low sales for the Collision Avoidance System. Also, with the lockdown norms set due to the pandemic, the R&D activity and production of collision avoidance systems were halted. However, post-pandemic, the prospects for collision avoidance systems look positive due to the projected increase in the use of autonomous vehicles.

Automotive collision avoidance systems prevent imminent crashes by receiving inputs from the environment and adapting accordingly. It takes control and performs functions that are difficult for drivers in complex situations. They use sensors and cameras to collect data and process it through controller units that send signals to drivers to alert them about the issues with their driving, other’s driving that increases the risk of collision and injury.

Various initiatives by governments of different countries to improve the safety systems onboard a car are being considered major growth factors. For instance, The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) of the United States has released a list of 10 most wanted transportation safety improvements at the beginning of 2021. This suggests the technologies that can be equipped to the vehicles for passenger safety.

  • Growing demand for autonomous vehicles is driving the automobile collision avoidance system demand. However, market growth is hindered by a high installation cost. Whereas, on the other side, rising in automotive safety norms and electronic integration in vehicles is anticipated to generate further opportunities for collision avoidance systems market expansion.

Key Market Trends

Increasing Demand for ADAS

The Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) market is expected to register huge growth during the forecast period. Increasing safety campaigns by different organizations and large-scale OEMs are significant factors for the increased public awareness of vehicle safety.

Rising awareness among customers is leading to growth in demand for vehicles with autonomous and advanced safety features. Government norms and policies are also boosting the sales of the ADAS market. US and European authorities have made the installation of Automotive Emergency Braking (AEB) and Forward Collision-Avoidance/Warning System up to a certain level in both passenger cars and all commercial vehicles mandatory from 2020.

The conventional trend of featuring advanced safety systems in luxury cars is gradually shifting towards standardizing safety systems across all segments of cars. For instance, in a move to increase the use of ADAS systems, UK’s government has approved the use of an automated lane-keeping system (ALKS) in April 2021, designed for use on motorways in slow traffic and other applications.

Tech giants like Google have entered this ADAS space for developing vehicle communication and sensing technology. Passive safety (safety measures to prevent drivers from injuries during or after the crash) has seen a lot of innovations in the past. Active Safety (to predict and avoid crashes) is in its initial stage and has a lot to offer. For instance, Continental AG bought stakes in AI chip startup Recogni in February 2021, to develop a chip that helps ADAS system for object recognition in realtime. Any ADAS technology that gets early approval of majority of players will play a crucial role in development of fully autonomous vehicles in future.

Asia Pacific – Fastest Growing Market

Asia Pacific region comprises geographies such as China, India, Indonesia, and Thailand where the disposable income of customers is increasing. In the Asia Pacific, the Collision avoidance system market is exhibiting growth due to a faster adoption rate among customers. Various OEMs are now introducing parking assist systems (earlier installed in luxury segment cars only) in mid and small-segment cars to create a point of differentiation from other OEMs.

China is a world leader in the automotive market and the second largest after Europe in terms of Electric Vehicle sales and market value. BYD, a Chinese automotive giant, has launched a new ADAS system called DiPilot in April 2020, to be put into commercial use first in its own Han model vehicle. With this system. BYD aims to become a data center for optimizing the ADAS system by learning driver profiles and driving habits which can be used to train the ADAS system.

In cost-sensitive markets like India, the ADAS system adoption is still in the nascent stages majorly due to the high expenditure incurred to buy the vehicles and lack of awareness among buyers concerning the safety, the collision avoidance systems provide. This trend is slowly changing for the better due to different awareness programs, campaigns, and government initiatives happening in the country.

For instance, at the SIAM conference held in 2020, the Union Minister for Road and Highway Transport said, the ministry is working towards a mandate that brings Collision Avoidance systems to all cars by 2022. This statement has created immense opportunities for tech companies to invest in the market. Companies like Mando Corp has started working with Mahindra and Mahindra to supply ADAS technology that can avoid front collisions by using autonomous emergency braking from 2019.

Competitive Landscape

The automotive collision avoidance systems market is dominated by few players such as Continental, Delphi, Denso, Autoliv, Mobileye, Panasonic, and Hella. It is estimated that more than 60 million units of vehicles have been installed with the ADAS system in 2019.

In August 2020, Continental has produced 30 million Radar sensors to support the worldwide efforts in making driving safer by using collision avoidance systems.
