The Indonesia data center market was valued at USD 1.53 billion in 2020, and it is expected to reach a value of USD 3.07 billion by 2026, registering a CAGR of 12.95 % over the forecast period 2021 – 2026.​ The growing internet economy of the region is one of the major drivers behind the growth. According to the higher management of SpaceDC, the SEA region’s internet economy has been valued at over USD 100 billion and is expected to grow to USD 300 billion by 2025; with this, the demand for data services and infrastructure is expected to increase exponentially over the forecasted period.

  • Indonesia ranks lower in the competitive index as compared to other Southeast Asian countries; however, the potential commercial upside for data center players is significant. Indonesia is witnessing a growing digital economy, coupled with the rapid growth of startup companies and ever-growing population, which is leading to a growth in hyperscale data centers. The latest research from Google and Temasek in their report, e-Conomy SEA 2020, stated that the growth of the digital economy in Indonesia is expected to reach USD 133 billion in 2025. Also, the internet economy GMV of Indonesia is expected to reach USD 124 billion in 2025.
  • The COVID-19 pandemic has posed additional stress on the overall economy across sectors, but it also steers multiple international vendors to focus on the digital economy. Multiple companies are increasing the investment in cloud infrastructure and trusted computing resources to help businesses speed up the recovery process and offer cloud-based intelligent solutions to support their digital transformation in the post-pandemic scenario. For instance, in April 2020, Alibaba Cloud announced to invest USD 28.2 billion in innovation and the development of operating systems, servers, and chips for its data center infrastructure, and Alibaba Cloud plans to build additional data centers on top of its existing 63 availability zones covering 21 regions across the world, including Indonesia.
  • According to content management service HootSuite and social media marketing agency We Are Social in the report “Digital 2020”, Internet users in Indonesia have reached 175.4 million, with penetration at 64%. This means as much as 64% of the total Indonesian population of 272.1 million, is connected to the Internet. This number has since increased from the year 2019, which was 17%, or approximately 25 million people.
  • Indonesia’s current e-commerce market is like China’s online marketplace beginnings, with a large pool of entrepreneurial sellers providing goods purchased based largely on social media recommendations. Moreover, the country is Asia’s foremost mobile-first nations, with one of the highest mobile-Facebook usage rate. This is also one of the major driving factors for the growth of data centers.
  • According to the Ministry of Finance (Republic of Indonesia), financial constraints and a lack of skilled workers are the main barriers to the adoption of new technologies. A relatively small 6% of firms have adopted new technologies and used emerging digitally-enabled tools. According to GSMA 2020 report, the proportion of mobile users aware of mobile internet who report barriers related to literacy and digital skills in Indonesia accounted for 41%.

Colocation Service is Expected to Grow Significantly

  • Jakarta is developing as a connectivity center, a major banking and financial hub representing a significant portion of Indonesia’s trade and services. It serves as the primary hub for colocation vendors. The SME industry in Indonesia is growing and has a vast potential to help grow the data center Industry. Indonesia was witnessed to have significant SMEs, including businesses, such as e-commerce, B2B, manufacturing, retail, and others in 2020. High-cost concerns of SMEs lead them to adopt colocation data center services.
  • The demand for colocation from global cloud service providers drives the data center services revenue growth in Indonesia. The Indonesian data centers market is considered to be one of the primitive data center markets in the world. The sector is expected to witness exponential growth due to the increase in the migration of OTT participants in Indonesia, increase in IT spending, and deployment of 5G, which will drive the data centers market.
  • The colocation provider will provide the bandwidth, IP, and power necessary to run the server. Colocation hosting effectively makes a smaller business to have a large IT department’s features without the set-up’s high price tag. According to the Jakarta Post, not all companies are willing to move to the public cloud in the region as they still want to have full control of their data without someone else’s being in possession, due to which, colocation is still big despite strong interest by businesses to adopt cloud services.
  • The colocation data centers in the region are engaging in the adoption of sustainable solutions. For instance, in October 2020, Lintasarta, Indonesian data communications and internet service provider achieved a 99.982% service level agreement figure with its corporate clients after adopting data center solutions by Schneider Electric. For the future, Lintasarta is looking for the use of a sustainable data center solution, EcoStruxure for Data Centers by Schneider Electric, on three of its colocation data centers in Banten.
  • However, it is relatively difficult for overseas data center colocation operators to enter or expand in Indonesia, due the lack of efficient fiber infrastructure outside the Golden Triangle and the abundant domestic outsourcing market.

IT and Telecommunications is Expected to Hold a Major Market Share

  • The rapid development in the information technology sector combined with drivers like mass consumption of products, urbanization, a surge in mobile usage, and a tech-hungry young population, makes a positive impact on the economic growth in Indonesia. This would significantly augment the data centers in the country to support the growing need in the forecast period.
  • The Datacenter industry began to gain drive with attractive investments from hyper-scale cloud providers such as Google, Alibaba & Amazon. In 2020, Alibaba Cloud announced USD 28 billion worth of data center investments covering 21 regions, including Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore to support digital transformation in a post-pandemic world. Following early expansion and development efforts from Alibaba Cloud in the region, Amazon Web Services (AWS) recently revealed plans to build data centers in the country by early 2022, along with Microsoft hosting 2,500 developers in Jakarta during late February 2020.
  • Many international service providers are entering the Asia-Pacific market in order to expand their presence in the international market. For instance, In December 2020, NetApp, a global cloud-led, data-centric software company, and Google Cloud, announced the availability of the containerized, software-based variant of NetApp Cloud Volumes Service in the Asia Pacific. South Korea, Hong Kong, and Indonesia will be the first three markets in the Asia Pacific region to roll out the service.
  • The telecommunication sector in the country is one of the fastest developing telecommunications markets in the world, which is driven by growth in both fixed and mobile broadband subscriptions. Greater affordability, expanded coverage, service improvements, increased data usage, and smartphone penetration is the main drivers of growth in the telecoms sector. Indonesia continues to expand its fiber-optic network and 4G coverage that is backed by strong investment in capital expenditure.
  • Telecommunications companies such as Nippon Telegraph spent around USD 500 million to build their third data center in Indonesia, that had begun operations in 2020. Demand for data centers in the region increased rapidly due to the revision of governmental regulation No. 82/2012 on electronic transactions and systems, requiring the placement of data centers and disaster recovery centers in Indonesia.

Competitive Landscape

​The Indonesia Data Center market comprises both major global vendors as well as regional players. Some of the prominent solution vendors in the market include Cisco, Dell, HP, and Pure Storage, among others. Owing to the opportunities emerging with 5G adoption and expected data volume increase, the vendors are upscaling their capabilities to retain and gain new customers.​ Overall, the competitive rivalry among the players is expected to be high and remain the same over the forecast period.

  • August 2020 – In order to serve more MSME sectors during the Covid-19 pandemic through transparent, safe and efficient ICT services, Telkomsigma launched Multi Cloud Management Platform (MCMP). With MCMP customers can easily select and operate the services they have only through one centralized dashboard so that cloud computing management can be more efficient.
  • June 2020 – PT DC Indonesia (DCI) opened its third Data Center Building (JK3) with a capacity of 12 MW. With the JK3 building in operation, DCI adds a capacity of up to 20% to the data center market in Indonesia from the total available of around 50-70 MW.
