The global market for cabbages and other brassicas was at 70.1 million metric ton, in terms of production, in 2019, and is projected to grow at a CAGR of 2.1% during the forecast period (2020-2025). There are three major types of cabbage, Brassica oleracea, green, red, and savoy. It belongs in the same plant family as many other vegetables, including Chinese cabbage, and broccoli. The annual per capita consumption of fresh cabbage in 2019 averaged 5.8 pounds per person and 1.3 pounds of canned (kraut) (USDA ERS, 2017). Cole crops, such as broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage, and cauliflower, are easily grown in South Carolina as weather conditions are suitable for their growth. The growing incidence of covid-19 has disrupted the supply chains initially. Although, the re-opening of supply chains has led to complete to-and-fro of agricultural produce like cabbages and brassicas and this in turn will drive the market over the forecast period since the consumption of various types of cabbages has returned to its pre-covid levels.

Increasing Productivity Due to Adoption of New Irrigation Technologies

Cabbage has been classified as intermediately susceptible to water stress, with the most critical irrigation period during the last 3 to 4 weeks before harvest. Efficient water management is a prerequisite to successive cabbage production. Water requirements vary from 380 mm to 500 mm depending on the climate and length of the growing season. Furrow, sprinkler, and trickle irrigation are the most adopted irrigation techniques used worldwide, which are driving the overall cabbages and other brassicas market. Thus, technological advancements have led to the increased worldwide production of cabbages across the globe which increased from 69.2 million metric ton in 2018 to 70.1 million metric ton in 2019.

Asia Pacific Leads the Global Cabbages and Other Brassicas Production

Asia-Pacific has witnessed the highest production of cabbages and other brassicas, with China being the leading country, in terms of production and export. China is the largest exporter of cabbages and other brassicas in the world and has accounted for 34% of the global exports in 2019. According to the Japanese Ministry of Finance, 2018, the import volume of Chinese cabbage from China to Japan increased 7.8 times compared to the previous year. The volume of cabbages exported from China to Japan has increased 5.8 times during early 2018. The major countries that import cabbages and other brassicas from China, in terms of value, as of 2019, are- Hong Kong (USD 198,043 thousand), Malaysia (USD 80,308 thousand), Vietnam (USD 173,678 thousand), and Thailand (USD 68,281 thousand), among others.
