The commercial aircraft overhead stowage bins market is anticipated to register a CAGR of over 4.5% during the forecast period.

Key Highlights

  • Overhead stowage bins have come a long way since their introduction in terms of motion control and stowability. The design has evolved with the type and quantity of passenger carry-on baggage and the demand for increased bin capacities. OEMs are working closely with airlines to develop new overhead bins that are large, lightweight, and aesthetically designed to suit passenger demands.
  • Overhead stowage bins are provided on every commercial passenger aircraft, and hence, their demand is increasing with the increasing deliveries of new aircraft.
  • New aircraft programs and cabin refurbishment projects are expected to drive the market growth over the next decade.

Key Market Trends

Wide-body Aircraft Segment is Estimated to Hold a Major Share During the Forecast Period

The number of passengers carried in a wide-body aircraft is much higher compared to narrow-body aircraft. Hence, the number of stowage bins is also higher. Also, in terms of size, wide-body aircraft overhead bins have larger stowage capacity. The grounding of Boeing 737MAX in March 2019 was expected to have a huge impact on the total deliveries of narrow-body aircraft by the end of 2019. As of July 2019, there was a total delivery of 57 Boeing 737MAX aircraft. Earlier in 2018, The Boeing Company delivered 256 737 MAX aircraft. This decline in narrow-body aircraft deliveries led to a decrease in the market share of narrow-body aircraft in 2019. Boeing offers its Space Bins as an optional feature on its 737MAX aircraft. Space bins can hold six standard-sized bags, which is two more than the large current Boeing Sky Interior pivot bins installed on several 737NGs. However, over the forecast period, the narrow-body aircraft segment is anticipated to register the highest CAGR during the forecast period. This is due to the introduction of long-range variants of the A320 family of aircraft and the ongoing overhead stowage bin retrofit programs. Earlier in December 2017, American Airlines selected Services by Airbus SE to offer cabin upgrades for 202 of its A321s in-service. With this contract, American Airlines became the first retrofit customer for Airbus’ new Airspace XL bins. Airbus SE claims that the new bins offer 40% increase in storage space for carry-on bags. The contract also included new production A321s for American Airlines that will also be equipped with new Airspace XL bins. In October 2019, Air France selected Safran Cabin’s latest ECOS luggage compartments to equip its A320 and A321 aircraft. The airline plans to gradually equip 40 A320s and 11 A321s with 1,342 new luggage compartments between September 2020 and September 2022.

Asia-Pacific Region is likely to Generate the Highest Demand During the Forecast Period

Asia-Pacific registered the highest air passenger traffic in 2018, which has forced the airlines to place new orders for newer generation aircraft. In June 2019, Taiwan’s China Airlines signed a Memorandum of Agreement for 11 A321neo aircraft and will acquire another 14 aircraft of the type on lease. In June 2019, China Southern Airlines took the delivery of its first of 20 A350-900s. Likewise, Japan Airlines took the delivery of its first of 31 A350XWB aircraft in June 2019. Comac C919, developed by Chinese aerospace manufacturer Comac, is expected to enter service after 2020 and received over 1,000 orders by mid-2019. With the increasing aircraft orders and deliveries, simultaneous demand is likely to be generated for overhead stowage bins from this region during the forecast period.

Competitive Landscape

The commercial aircraft overhead stowage bins market has few players, but the competitive rivalry is intense. Airbus SE, FACC AG, Safran SA, The Boeing Company, JAMCO Corporation, AIM ALTITUDE, and ITT Inc. are some of the manufacturers of overhead stowage bins and associated components for commercial aircraft. With the introduction of new aircraft models, companies that can offer innovative solutions and products have the advantage of receiving long-term contracts. Also, the increasing investments by aircraft OEMs in developing and designing their own overhead bins can, to some extent, impact the market share of manufacturers of overhead bins globally.
