The global market for garlic is estimated to register a CAGR of 4.7% over the forecast period 2021-2026. COVID-19 has a direct and negative impact on the garlic market globally. China, being the largest producer of garlic, accounting for 80% of all production, with the intensification of COVID-19, supplies from China have decreased and garlic prices have increased drastically.

Garlic is the most important crop in most Asian countries. Hence, Asia-Pacific holds a 91.0% share of the global market, in terms of consumption of garlic. Garlic is consumed in every home and used in processing industry. Huge demand for garlic powder due to its varied applications in the food and health care industries which is driving the market globally. It is also used in varied food preparations like chutneys, pickles, curry powders, curried vegetables, meat and meat product preparations, tomato ketchup, etc.,

The garlic prices are rising, mainly in Europe. Looking at the conditions for Chinese garlic export to the European market, FOB prices are estimated between 1,100-1,200 USD per ton, which is an increase of around 40% by the end of mid 2021.

The Spanish harvest has suffered a lot from the adverse weather conditions in 2019-2020, resulting in a drastic reduction in the production of garlic. However, the demand has risen sharply, especially in North America, where it has doubled in Canada and increased by as much as 70.0% in the United States.

Increasing Demand for Garlic due to its Various Uses in Industries

According to the WHO, a garlic-containing meal may lead to a reduction in cancer risk through regular intake of this vegetable. Garlic is consumed in both fresh and used in the processing industry. It is also used in varied food preparations like chutneys, pickles, curry powders, curried vegetables, meat and meat product preparations, tomato ketchup, etc., The raw garlic is also used in second generation products like garlic powder, garlic salt, garlic vinegar, garlic cheese croutons, garlic potato chips, garlic bread, etc. Hence, the garlic market has fairley constant demand over the forecast period.

The boom in home cooking has boosted the demand for garlic, and volume increases show suppliers are up to the challenge. However, the year 2021 saw a rise in foodservice demand for garlic and a decrease in the retail demand slightly as consumers return to restaurants – though people continue to prepare more meals at home than they did pre-pandemic. According to ITC Trade, the global import value increased from USD 2,513.5 million to USD 3,033.0 million between 2019 and 2020. Apart from this, garlic powder is used as herbal medicine. Hence there is a huge demand for garlic powder due to its varied applications in the food and health care industries which is driving the market globally.

Asia-Pacific Leads the Global Garlic Market

Asia-Pacific dominates the global market for garlic, with particularly China being the leader. It holds more than 80% of the global garlic production. According to Food and Agriculture Organization(FAO), in 2018 garlic production in China was 22.8 million metric ton which had increased to 23.3 million metric ton in 2019. The production of garlic is favored in a region with temperatures ranging from 12 to 24 degree Celsius. China’s exports represent 70.3% of world exports for this product and rank first with the export for 2021 valued at USD 2.1 million an increase from 2019 exports which valued at USD 1.9 million, as per the ITC trade map data.

The current supply of garlic comes from plantations in Jinxiang, Shandong, Peizhou, Jiangsu, Qixian Henan, Zhongmou, and Henan. Indonesia is the largest importer of Chinese garlic, with a 22.3% share of total Chinese garlic exports, followed by Vietnam and Malaysia, with 14.8% and 5.1%, respectively.
