The global gravity die casting market is expected to register a CAGR of 3.41%, during the forecast period, 2019-2024, owing to its demand for light weight and low cost produced parts from various industries, especially automotive industry.

Key Highlights

  • The automobile regulatory framework in Europe and North America has been instrumental in creating a sustainable environment in the automobile industry.
  • In December 2018, the EU set new regulations for carbon dioxide emissions for new passenger cars and commercial vehicles. The agreed-upon targets aim to reduce average CO2 emissions from new passenger cars by 15% in 2025 and by 37.5% in 2030, both relative to the 2021 base-figure. A 15% reduction by 2025, and a further 31% for 2030 was agreed upon for light-commercial vehicles.
  • According to the US EPA frameworks, the automaker’s average fuel economy was reached to 35.5 mpg in 2016 and go up to 54.5 mpg in 2025. This may present a 90% increase in average fuel efficiency, in comparison to the 2011 model year average of 28.6 miles per gallon.
  • To meet the above target levels, the need to reduce vehicle weight has been the major driving factor for the automakers to employ gravity die-casted parts in some of the vehicle systems over the past years and is likely to continue during the forecast period as well.

Key Market Trends

Automotive Industry is Expected Capture Major Market Share

  • Gravity die casting is a standard process for manufacturing some high-integrity automotive parts. This process produces fine-grained and dense structures with attractive mechanical properties, due to the fast and oriented hardening of the melts in permanent metal molds, which makes it ideal for components like engine-related parts. But the trend away from the combustion engine toward alternatives like electric powered vehicles has inevitable effects on the demand for die-casted parts. For instance, while a combustion engine contains approximately 200 casted parts, only around 25, i.e., one tenth of them, are needed for an electrical drivetrain.
  • This method also gives better tolerances and surface finish than other methods, like sand casting. Hence, it represents a proven technology to produce fairly large batch quantities of the order of 1,000 to 10,000. But tooling costs vary and are generally higher than the sand-casting method.
  • Hence, manufacturers are expected to revamp their portfolio to the changing market conditions, which is expected to drive the market over the forecast period.

North America Captured a Significant Market Share

  • Among the North American countries, the United States covers the largest market share of more than 65% in the North American gravity die casting market.
  • It is also the second-largest producer of aluminum metal castings in the world, with a production of 1.7 million metric ton, as of 2017. The country also produced 138,890 metric ton and 325,062 metric ton of magnesium and zing castings, respectively. The United States is also characterized by the presence of large number of local gravity die casting players.
  • The United States is home to one of the largest automotive markets in the world. It is home to over 13 major automobile manufacturers with an average of 11 million vehicles produced per year. Hence, with the abundance of casting companies and raw material suppliers, the US automotive manufacturers and OEMs are adopting gravity die casting parts in their vehicles.
    • Also, the country’s huge electrical and electronics industry, where enclosures, cabinets, and boxes are some areas where the gravity die casting process results in producing considerable thick walled and smooth surface components, is expected to contribute to the market growth.
