The agricultural films market is estimated to grow at a rate of 6.4% during the forecast period (2021-2026).

Travel restrictions and nationwide shutdowns imposed by many governments to slow down the transmission of the COVID-19 virus reduced the demand for agricultural films in the initial phase of the pandemic. Asia-Pacific, the biggest market for agricultural films, was severely impacted by the travel and trade restrictions imposed and shortage of labor in the agriculture sector, which resulted in low sales in mid-2020. However, the conditions have improved in many parts of the world due to the ease of restrictions and the importance of agriculture as an essential service. The demand for greenhouse vegetables has also significantly increased in some countries, which in turn is boosting the demand for agricultural films. Hence, the overall impact of COVID-19 on the agricultural films market is expected to be moderate in 2021.

Decreasing area of arable land, increasing demand for films in protected agriculture, increasing adoption of mulching films, and increasing demand for biodegradable films are expected to drive the agricultural films market during the forecast period. The impact of agricultural films on soil protection and the indirect impact on yield due to soil moisture conservation and reduction of weed growth are impacting the adoption of mulching using films as a standard practice in advanced agriculture. Soil solarization is one of the most common practices in advanced agriculture. Films reduce the exposure of soil and seeds, thereby reducing the impact of weed seeds, conserving soil moisture and nutrients, and reducing soil compaction. Films are also used extensively in protected cultivation. Considering this indirect yield advantage, the need for enhancing agricultural productivity is expected to drive the market for agricultural films. Furthermore, with the increased concerns about environmental risks, the demand for biodegradable agricultural films is expected to increase over the forecast period. However, environmental concern over plastic films usage is expected to restrain the market growth in the coming years.

Key Market Trends

Increasing Demand for Films in Protected Agriculture driving the Market

A growing global population, decreasing arable land, and increasing demand for year-round access to fresh produce have boosted the greenhouse-grown fresh produce market, hence increasing the demand for agricultural films to enhance crop productivity. Polyethylene is a widely used material for agricultural films to protect crops and improve crop yield in greenhouses and tunnels. As per the World Greenhouse Vegetable Statistics- 2019, the global greenhouse vegetable area was 496,800 hectare in 2019, up from 489,214 hectare in 2017. With the increasing area involved in greenhouse farming worldwide, the agricultural films market is expected to grow significantly in the coming years.

Asia-Pacific dominates the Agricultural Films Market

Large strips of the area under greenhouse vegetables and a growing emphasis on high value and export-oriented cultivation of fruits and vegetables are driving the market for agricultural films in Asia-Pacific. The region occupies close to half of the world’s total area under greenhouse cultivation for vegetables. According to the International Greenhouse Vegetable Production statistics 2017, out of the 489,214 hectare of greenhouse agriculture land area globally, Asia-Pacific accounted for 224,974 hectare.

Farmers in the Asia-Pacific region in general, and in China, in particular, are adopting protected agriculture for enhancing crop production and quality. It is estimated that currently, almost 3.3 million hectare of crop area in China is under protected cultivation. Other large countries in the region such as India, Japan, South Korea are also using agricultural films in greenhouses and mulching, especially in the cultivation of vegetables. Therefore, the expanding cultivation of fruits and vegetables by the greenhouse method in Asia-Pacific is expected to drive the market for agricultural films further in the coming years.

Competitive Landscape

The global market for agricultural films is consolidated owing to the presence of a few large players and several small-scale and regional players. Berry Global Inc., BASF SE, Ab Rani Plast Oy, and Plastika Kritis S.A are the major players in the market, based on their revenue in 2020. Major industry participants have been investing heavily in R&D for commercializing biodegradable and longer shelf-life products. The key companies are entering into partnerships with biotechnology firms, in order to ensure sustainable product innovation in the future.
