The Animal Ortho-Prosthetics Market was estimated to grow at a CAGR of 7.1% during the forecast period of 2021-2026. The COVID-19 pandemic is expected to have a significant impact on the market. There are a few known COVID-19 infections among pets, globally. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, May 2020, one cat in Hong Kong tested positive without displaying symptoms, while a cat in Belgium recovered after nine days. In April 2020, the CDC and the US Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) National Veterinary Services Laboratories (NVSL) confirmed the cases of two pet cats that were infected by COVID-19. These were the first pets in the United States to test positive for the disease. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association conducted in 2020, only 30% of veterinary practices are using telemedicine for providing services, and close to 20% of practices were only seeing emergency-related cases at the time of the survey. However, orthopedic and implants are treated as emergency care, and many of the series providers are implementing the same. For instance, as of June 2020, MSU College of Veterinary Medicine leadership announced that it has a working reopening plan in the coming months.

Factors such as the high prevalence of obesity and increase in the pet population are expected to propel the market growth. According to the 2019-2020 National Pet Owners Survey conducted by the American Pet Products Association (APPA), 67% of households, or about 85 million families in the United States, owned a pet. As per the Chinese Pet Industry 2018 White Paper, in 2017, more than 91.49 million dogs and cats were raised as pets in the urban areas of China, which means that 9% of the urban population (813.47 million) in the country had pets. Additionally, a significant increase in animal population is observed globally, which is likely to drive the market studied in the future. For instance, as per the Farming Statistics 2018, by the Department of Environment Food and Rural Affairs, there were 9.6 million cattle and calves in 2018 in the United Kingdom. In Mexico, there were about 7.9 million cows and calves in 2019, which indicated an increase of more than 7.7 million compared to 2018, as per a report published by the United States Department of Agriculture (Global Agricultural Information, 2019).

According to the People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals, in the United Kingdom (UK), the pet dog and cat population in 2013 was found to be 7.8 million and 9.5 million, respectively, which increased to 9.9 million and 10.9 million, respectively, in 2019. According to the annual report of the European Pet Food Industry Association (FEDIAF) for 2020, dogs and cats are the major pets adopted in Europe. Moreover, an estimate of 85 million European households own at least one pet animal. The trend is further expected to increase during the forecast period. As per the American Pet Products Association’s 2019-2020 National Pet Owners Survey, around 1.6 million United States households owned horses. Additionally, dog and cat ownership held the highest number in the country. According to Der deutsche Heimtiermarkt 2018, in Germany, almost 15 million cats lived in German households as of 2018, making it the most represented animal among pet owners in the country. Dogs are around 9.4 million and then followed by various other small animals. As per the Australian Pet Ownership Statistics data published in 2018, more than 62% of Australian households own a pet. Out of these, 38% are dog owners and 29% are cat owners. In addition to this, 59% of people who do not currently own a pet admit that they would like to own one in the near future.

Additionally, owing to the direct association of obesity and overweight with osteoarthritis and mobility issues in animals, increase in the disorder is expected to boost demand for ortho-prosthetics. Excess fat and body weight increases the load on joints resulting in the progression of arthritis and further difficulty in movement. Hence, the prevalence of joint inflammatory diseases is expected to grow with the rise in the prevalence of obesity, which has currently been identified as the most common nutritional health problem in dogs. According to the results of 2018 Pet Obesity Survey done by the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention (APOP), 55.8% of dogs have been identified as overweight (body condition score (BCS) 6-7) or obese (BCS 8-9). The prevalence of obese dogs is expected to increase in the United States, driving the growth of the ortho-prosthetics market.

Thus, the aforementioned factors, along with the rising adoption and increasing population of animals, are expected to drive market growth over the forecast period.

Key Market Trends

Prosthetics Segment is Expected to Grow Over the Forecast Period in the Animal Ortho-Prosthetics Market

The Prosthetics segment of the market will witness significant growth in the forecast years as it offers certain advantages over other products and is considered to be an appropriate alternative for surgical procedures and post-surgical assistance for recovery. Animal prostheses are medical devices that replace missing or amputated limb segments in animals. The technological advancements in prosthetics, along with the rising adoptions, are the primary factors boosting the market growth. The prices of the prosthetics and other supportive materials are around USD 1,000 for prosthetic limbs and USD 500 for braces, which are less expensive than surgery. However, according to the reports, surgery to fix ACL in dogs can cost around USD 3,300. Furthermore, advancements in products and the advent of cost-effective 3D printed prosthetics are expected to further boost the market growth. Also, many organizations’ rising awareness regarding prosthetics helps to grow the market share. For instance, Penn State alum’s startup, Bionic Pets, is an organization that creates prosthetics and braces for many kinds of animals. It ships casting molds all across the world and then makes the prosthetic legs or braces at its location in Sterling, Virginia. Hence, owing to the aforementioned factors, the market for prosthetics is expected to have a notable market growth over the forecast period.

North America is Expected to Hold a Significant Share in the Market and Expected to do Same in the Forecast Period

The geographical analysis of the animal ortho-prosthetics market states the dominance of North America in the global market. The major factors attributing toward the dominance and growth of this region are higher availability of therapeutic options for animals, greater awareness regarding ortho-prosthetics, the presence of major market players, and rising animal health expenditure. The United States is expected to dominate the North American animal ortho-prosthetic market over the forecast period, owing to the rising companion animal adoption, rising prevalence of canine arthritis, and increase in per capita animal health expenditure. As per the data published by the American Pet Products Association, in 2018, the total pet healthcare expenditure was estimated to be USD 72.13 billion, while it was USD 47.41 billion in 2015, which is a good opportunity for the market studied. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has affected veterinary services, including ortho and prosthetics in the United States in 2020. According to the results of the 2018 Pet Obesity Survey done by the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention (APOP), 55.8% of dogs were identified as overweight (body condition score (BCS) 6-7) or obese (BCS 8-9). Hence, the rise in the prevalence of canine obesity, traumatic injuries, , and high awareness about pet health among pet owners are propelling the market growth.
