The automotive autonomous emergency braking system market is expected to register a CAGR of over 7% during the forecasted period (2020 – 2025)

Key Highlights

  • Every year around 1.25 million people are killed in road accidents. Highest numbers being from developing countries. Many governments across the globe have started to impose stringent regulations to curb rising road accidents. Major OEMs have started investing in R&D to develop superior technology. Increasing concerns towards vehicle safety, the rise in the adoption of advanced braking systems, advanced AI-powered systems, and government vehicle safety norms combined with growth in vehicle production worldwide are expected to help the automotive autonomous emergency braking system market grow the forecasted period.
  • Many OEMs are equipping their products with AEB systems in most medium and luxury cars segment. In 2017, Toyota equipped 50% of its vehicle fleet with an AEB system. With the increasing production of autonomous vehicles, which is expected to have a CAGR of over 21% during the forecasted period, this market is expected to have a high growth rate post-2020 due to the COVID-19 outbreak slowed down the production volumes of the vehicles.
  • In 2019, almost 92 million motor vehicles were produced worldwide. China, Japan, and Germany were the largest producers of cars and commercial vehicles in 2019. Global motor vehicle sales fell by 4% in 2019, representing the second consecutive year of declining demand. Before the pandemic hit, it has been estimated that international car sales were on track to reach 80 million sales in 2020; however, as economic woes continue, demand for new motor vehicles is forecasted to be in the negative throughout 2020, but the sales are expected to increase rapidly during the later period of the forecasted period.

Key Market Trends

Rising Adoption of Autonomous Emergency Braking Systems

The growing interest of customers towards autonomous emergency braking systems is driving the market. The rising number of road accidents has fuelled this demand. Governments around the world are encouraging these kinds of safety features. Increasing disposable income and changing customer preferences towards fully loaded safety features cars is driving this market growth. The passenger car segment is expected to lead the market during the forecasted period. Research shows that 75% of all the collisions occur at speeds below 25 mph in urban driving environments, and AEB has led to a 38% reduction in rear-end crashes (EURO NCAP). Autonomous vehicle technology with level 4 and level 5 autonomous cars will become a large market worldwide. By 2030, the autonomous vehicle market is expected to reach a value of USD 60 billion. North American region is expected to own up to 30% of the world’s self-driving cars, with China and western Europe holding 24%. All these factors are expected to have a positive contribution towards the automotive autonomous emergency braking system market growth.

North America is Expected To Lead Market

Autonomous braking was offered on 51% of the model lines available in the United States. Tesla and Volvo both have AEB as a standard feature on 100% of their vehicles.

Crash imminent braking holds the largest share in this market. It is the most reliable braking system in the market. The crash imminent braking system is mostly integrated into a forward-collision warning system that provides vital information to ECU. This, combines with raising usage of the Disc brake system in cars, is expected to help the market growth during the forecasted period. As we advance, OEMs must be active in achieving the AEB commitment or face the possibility of brand erosion due to being behind in safety advances. In particular, AEB being incorporated into U.S. government safety ratings may alter consumer perception one way or another. However, this was not the case before the pledge as automakers put different importance levels to AEB systems. The entire industry will also need to step up to the vehicle fleet’s challenge as AEB is not currently offered as a standard feature. While Asian brands such as Lexus and Subaru are among the leaders in automatic emergency braking, several brands are below the curve. The Korean nameplates, Hyundai and Kia, will need to invest heavily in AEB technology through all body styles.

Competitive Landscape

The automotive autonomous emergency braking system market is consolidated, with few major players dominating the market. Robert Bosch, Continental AG, ZF Friendrichagen AG, Hyundai Mobis, and Hitachi Automotive System ltd have led the market. There have been key developments among the players in the market. For instance:

  • On 23rd April 2020, Veoneer announced an initial agreement to divert the US brake control business to ZF Friedrichshafen AG.
  • On April 16, 2020, Hitachi Automotive Systems acquired Seneos, which specializes in autonomous software technology.
