Antimicrobial additives are chemical ingredients or specific solutions that are infused into a product during manufacturing process. These additives kill microorganisms or inhibit their growth until product shelf life. Moreover, they can improve the performance of a surface by permanently reducing negative effects of microbes. This has enabled manufacturers to offer products that are cleaner, safer, and more hygienic to use, giving them an instant competitive advantage.

Organic formulations are further segmented into arsenic-based formulations and non-arsenic based formulations. Non-arsenic-based-formulations is sub-segmented into triclosan, non-metal biocides, and others. Inorganic formulation is segmented into silver, copper, zinc. Inorganic formulation holds the major share in the market and is the fastest growing segment by types owing to its various advantages over organic formulation. Organic antimicrobial additives are small molecules, incompatible with the polymer matrix, and diffuse with the surface of product where they can interact with microorganisms. Organic formulations display biostatic effect—prevention of reproduction of the organism and are utilized in disposable items rather than durable goods with longer lifespan as there is the possibility of leaching out of the polymer and being thermally unstable.

Antimicrobial additives kill microorganisms such as protozoans, bacteria, and fungi or inhibit their growth. Antimicrobial additives are used in number of applications such as PU foam, plastic, paints, and coatings, pulp and paper, and others. Additionally, these additives are also used on a larges scale in various food items, medicines, polymers, and others. Untreated plastic articles can be attacked by various microbes resulting into unpleasant odors, discoloration, and polymer degradation.
