Based on type, the market is segmented into aerobic, anaerobic, fungi/mold, and other types. Aerobic segment is expected to account for highest share among types. Identification of aerobic bacteria and their count in samples from various industries is of utmost important. The aerobic plate count (APC) is one type of microbiological purity tests used for identification of bacterial populations on a sample. It is also known as standard plate count, aerobic colony count, total plate count, or mesophilic count. This test works on the assumption that each cell of sample forms a visible colony on mixing with agar comprising the appropriate nutrients. However, it does not represent measure and analysis of the entire bacterial population and does not distinguish types of bacteria. It is used to measure organoleptic acceptability, sanitary quality, and adherence to good manufacturing practices.
Identification of anaerobic bacteria plays an important role as some of the anaerobic bacteria may cause affect human health. Automated systems allow the user to perform various test simultaneously from identification to count. Anaerobic plate count is used to measure the number of anaerobic bacteria. However, the presence of anaerobic bacteria in a sample does not necessarily mean that sample has potential foodborne pathogens. For instance, some foods such as raw meat may naturally have high number of anaerobic mesophilic bacteria. However, few strains of the bacteria may contaminate the food.
