レポート概要

The Thailand freight & logistics market is expected to reach a market value of USD 122 billion by 2023, registering a CAGR of 6.08% during the forecast period (2018 – 2023). The country has well-developed infrastructure and central location within the greater Mekong Sub-region (GMS), which comprises of Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam, and the Chinese mainland provinces of Guangxi and Yunnan. It has become a key logistics hub for companies that are setting up production bases and sales networks in the Indochina region. The formation of ASEAN economic community (AEC) has led to an increase in trade and service liberalization, resulting in a more robust intra-regional trade, which has boosted the demand for more sophisticated and comprehensive logistics services, mainly for foreign companies, with a presence in multiple locations across the region.
Insights on Freight Forwarding

The freight forwarding business in Thailand is dominated by the global players, owing to their expertise in service offerings and presence in the global market. A large chunk of freight movement flows through road, which creates significance for the local players in the market, as knowledge of regional borders is important in road freight services. The ratio of local vs. global players in Thailand freight forwarding is still 35:65, because in cross-border transshipment, the shipping lines and air cargo flyers are more supportive and inclined toward large freight forwarders, due to continuous and reliable flow of trade from multiple locations. For instance, strong presence of DHL, DB Schenker, CEVA, and other global players (especially the western origin players) in the Middle East, Europe, and North America get the preferential benefits from the shipping lines and air cargo flyers, because these regions are some of the established global hubs for trade, and the majority of trade flows through these freight forwarders.

Presently, DHL holds a leading position in the Thai logistics market, with a foothold in air & sea freight and their expertise in 3PL services. Other major players, such as CEVA, DB Schenker, Khuehne + Nagel, Damco, NYK Line, and Toll, dominate the market in specific segments. For instance, DB Schenker dominates the Thai contract logistics industry, while in the road freight segment, NYK group is a key and major player. The Thai Logistics companies, reacting to the spread of industrial locations and improvement of roads, are also stepping up cross-border trucking services. Japan’s Nippon Express already began offering consolidated transport between Bangkok and Hanoi, on fixed schedules, since 2017.

Insights on Contract Logistics

The development of the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) is expected to create a huge demand for contract logistics in Thailand. The country has approved an investment of USD 45 billion for EEC, which is anticipated to be completed by 2021. The EEC spans 13,285 sq. km covering three provinces at Chachoengsao, Chonburi, and Rayong in Eastern Thailand. The demand from the automotive, industrial, technology, and healthcare sectors is driving the market for contract logistics. With this initiative, the connectivity between airports, ports, industrial clusters, and urban centers is likely to be even faster and the country is also in the process of developing high-speed and double-track railways.

In 2017, DHL, the world’s largest contract logistics company, invested TBH 2.7 billion to expand its presence across Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Myanmar by 2020. The company has recently expanded into a new facility in Bangkok. The consumer, retail, industrial, automotive, and technology sectors are driving the demand for contract logistics. DHL’s Thailand network includes a storage space of 650,000 sq. m, which includes the use of unmanned vehicles, automation, vision packing, and robotics.
