The medical sensors market report has been segmented into temperature, pressure, motion, etc., based its type and as diagnostic, monitoring, imaging, etc., based on its application.

Opportunities and Drivers for Medical Sensors Market
The medical sensors market has undergone a significant change in the evolution of sensor technology. With the invention of digital medical monitoring devices, sensors have become the core of medical monitoring devices market. They allow monitoring of the health condition of patients, elderly, etc. The wearable sensing instruments have also been of important in driving the market for medical sensors. With the increased use of fitness band, health & heart monitor, etc., wearable medical sensor market has seen an upward market trend. The interconnectivity of devices and the ability to transfer the information in real-time has made this segment very popular. Medical sensors are now able to sync to a variety of devices and are not limited to work on only one platform. This has allowed the market to explore unchartered domains in the recent years. The latest technological advancements have also made these sensors accurate, miniature in size in order to allow the benefit to be passed to the end user, as well as become affordable devices. The development in the field of lithium polymer and battery technology in these devices has helped these sensors capture a significant market share in the portable devices’ domain.

Medical sensors are not limited to this use, they find application in various forms, like checking/monitoring alcohol level in blood, biomechanics, blood analysis, blood flow, blood pressure, body temperature, breath analysis, eye parameters, eye pressure, fingerprint, heart rate, human identification, human motion capture, ocular movement, people counting, pulsation, and many others. The use of sensors is becoming popular as there is no scope for human error, which can prove fatal in some conditions. The medical institutions use a sophisticated set of sensors to create a monitoring system and have a higher significance value. The miniaturization and easy dependability make these sensors an attractive deal for the medical segment. The use of sensors is not limited to patient care, it is also used in tracking the movement of pharmaceutical and other test materials related to patients.

Monitoring is an Important Use of Medical Sensors

Sensors for monitoring are used in defibrillators & heart pacemakers, blood pressure monitors, patient monitoring equipment, and other integrated health monitoring equipment. Accelerometers are the core of these sensors. In medical applications, they are witnessing a significant growth rate owing to advancements in MEMS technology, which has enabled a wide range of new applications.

For instance, MEMS accelerometers can be used to alert medical professionals when patients fall. In particular, elderly patients may suffer serious injuries from a fall. Wearable, intelligent devices equipped with MEMS inertial sensors can be used to sense and evaluate the severity of a fall and signal for help, which can further be aided by a GPS to provide location information. MEMS accelerometers can also be used to detect the heart rate of a patient, which is traditionally measured using Electrocardiogram (ECG). With the increase in the number of patients suffering cardiovascular diseases, the market for these sensors is set to grow

Key Developments in the Market

• October 2017 – Murata Manufacturing Co, Ltd, announced the completion of the acquisition of Vios Medical, Inc. (Headquarters: St. Paul, MN, USA; “Vios”). This acquisition represents a major foothold for Murata’s entry into the global healthcare and medical fields. Murata will effectively utilize Vios’s technologies, expertise, and a network of overseas hospitals to work towards further business expansion. Vios a healthcare IT startup developed a chest sensor that can measure heart & respiratory rates and run electrocardiograms, etc. It also develops and provides software, cloud services, etc. to monitor them. Vital-signs data obtained through the sensor can be monitored in real time, and the data can even be analyzed in quasi-real time by low-cost commercial devices. With the use of a wireless network, patients in a hospital can be continuously monitored regardless of their movements.
• August 2017 – Murata Manufacturing Co, Ltd successfully developed an ultra-small rotary encoder with the switch, the micro ES, which is now the world’s smallest encoder switch. This product is primarily intended for smartwatches, bluetooth supporting headsets, and smart glasses.
• March 2017 – Murata introduced Piezo Vibe for a wearable device. Murata Manufacturing Co, Ltd has announced the PJFV series of low power consumption (6 mW, A3 VDC) miniature (10.5 mm x 3.8 mm x 2 mm) vibrators employing piezoelectric ceramics.

The major players include – DENSO CORPORATION, INFINEON TECHNOLOGIES, BOSCH, TEXAS INSTRUMENTS, SENSATA TECHNOLOGIES, DELPHI AUTOMOTIVE, CTS CORPORATION, MAXIM INTEGRATED, FREESCALE, ANALOG DEVICES, AND STMICROELECTRONICS N.V., amongst others
