Vietnam waste management market was valued at USD 3.8 billion in 2020 and is expected to register a CAGR of 5.1% during the forecast period (2021 – 2026). Vietnam’s waste management is still ineffective for which the country is making continuous efforts to manage the solid waste in an innovative and creative way. In 2018, the annual Vietnamese waste production comprised more than 27.8 million tons consisting of 46% from municipal sources, the remainder delivered from agriculture and industry. he five biggest cities – Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City (HCM City, former Saigon), Haiphong, Da Nang and Can Tho – are responsible for about 70% of the total waste generation. The municipal solid waste contains 60% to 70% of biodegradable residues by wet weight.
Covid-19 pandemic has negatively impacted the waste management market in Vietnam. It is driving the plastic products market for prevention, testing, and treatment worldwide. Safely disposing of huge mountains of plastic waste is a major problem faced by many countries.

Some of the major drivers in the market include Vietnam’s rapid industrialization and urbanization, this has increased the output of Vietnam’s hazardous solid waste, that needs to be effectively managed. Also, shortcomings that are associated with the leachate from improperly constructed and managed landfills, solid waste management is one of the top government priorities in Vietnam.

One of the restraints in the market is the Technology currently implemented for the solid waste treatment, it fails to meet the general sanitary requirements and might cause harm to the humans.

Key Market Trends

Spotlight on the technologies innovating in the treatment of waste generated in Vietnam

Currently, about 85% of the waste generated in Vietnam is being buried without treatment in landfill sites, 80% of which are unhygienic and pollute the environment. The national 3R (Reduce, Recycle, Reuse) campaign gained momentum with wastes being dumped into the nearest landfills. Majority of the companies in Vietnam’s solid waste management industry are state-owned with the technologies provided by the foreign countries, few of them are large multinational companies and have subsidiaries in Vietnam. Most of the technology providers are from Singapore, China, USA and European countries. However, adoption of technologies in the country is lower and is mainly focused on the hardware products. The disadvantage created by the unclear legislation in the industry compels oneself to utilize foreign methods to tackle waste. Numerous waste to energy technologies are being encouraged by the government to utilize the waste and make useful resources for further use.

Plastic recycling insights in Vietnam Municipal Waste Management scenario

Vietnam is one among the top 5 countries in the world that together account for about 60% of the ocean’s plastic pollution. In 2019, approximately 35% of all scrap plastics imported to Vietnam came from the Japan. In 2019, the import value of scrap plastic to Vietnam amounted to about 126 million U.S. dollars.

Hanoi of Vietnam has the highest recycling rate compared to any other Asian cities with about 20% of the municipal waste recycled. It’s interesting to consider that the recycling activities are practiced at a household level as people attempt to sell or also give away recyclable metal cans or paper to iron dealers or waste-pickers. The waste-pickers play a key role in the waste management system as they sort out waste at source, classify it and then sell it to recycling companies.

Most of the recycling businesses in Vietnam are either informal family businesses or small scale enterprises. Recycling is considered an urgent requirement in the waste management in Vietnam as an effective option to reduce waste going into landfills. In Vietnam, the National Waste Management Strategy provides a detailed framework for building a circular economy focusing on the complete waste collection by 2025.

Competitive Landscape

The market in the country seems to be fairly competitive owing to the fact that there is increasing economic activity leading to heavier amounts of wastage that need effective management techniques. In Vietnam, more and more investments in the waste management industry are helping the city of Can Tho in preventing the clogging of the drains, which could result in flooding. The Vietnamese government is very open to business activities and presents itself as an enterpriser.

Germany enjoys a high reputation in Vietnam, and the reputation for reliability and high-quality work often precedes German companies and providers. On the other hand, the number of foreign competitors is constantly growing and only quality is often not enough to sustain as a long-term business partner. Vietnam enjoys a relatively strong competition with the technology suppliers and the market players from the Asian region specially from Japan, Taiwan and Korea.
