レポート概要

Membrane wastewater treatment technologies were introduced in the laboratory more than 50 years ago. By the 1990s, membrane cleaning mechanism was incorporated into product design, allowing use for the treatment of drinking water and production of recycled wastewater. In recent times, membrane wastewater treatment technologies have advanced rapidly, spurred along by a series of incremental technological advances and lack of fresh water resources worldwide. These technologies remove, destroy, and recycle pollutants into less harmful secondary materials, and are smaller, cost-effective, and more efficient, and thereby, can be applied to a wide range of applications.
The plans for market expansion in the membrane WWT technology market majorly depend on the industrial productivity and the packaged WWT systems. The report is segmented based on application as follows – healthcare, energy, industrial, food & beverage, and others. Based on geography, the market has been segmented into – United States, Canada, Mexico, and the rest of North America, with the United States holding the largest share in the market.

Increasing Demand for Low Pressure Membrane Technologies

Wastewater treatment plants face increasingly stringent discharge standards, due to the commitment to protect natural resources. Low-pressure membrane process is being adopted heavily by wastewater treatment technology, as many of the applications cannot use conventional processes. For instance, the prescribed phosphorus limit in effluent standards cannot be met with the conventional membrane process. The limit is, thus, obtained by the low-pressure membrane process. Low-pressure membrane processes can reduce the phosphorus levels of water to concentrations as low as 0.05 mg/L. Additionally, persistent and ongoing membrane cost reductions over the last two decades, coupled with updated technologies that cut O&M costs, are driving the strong demand for membrane wastewater treatment technologies.

Application across a Broadening Range of Industrial and Municipal Installation

The demand for low-pressure membrane in North America is on rise, due to the high level of pollution from industrial, commercial, and residential waste. For instance, in the United States, 55% of the population lives within 50 miles of the coast, and results in overcrowding and significant increase in residential waste. This has led to the adoption of wastewater treatment plants in these areas. Low-pressure membranes are used by plants to provide effective physical disinfection and solids removal, which helps in achieving good wastewater effluent quality. This water can then be used suitably for direct and indirect potable reuse. Specialized applications of pressure membrane process, along with technical innovations, have given rise to its demand in the country. The increasing demand is expected to push upward in the coming future, due to the rise in pollutants and effluents ejected in water by industries, and it will act as a driver for the North America membrane wastewater treatment market.
